Range reports
« on: May 07, 2009, 12:49:58 AM »
Went down the gun store/range today: Shot the new .357 GP 100 that we bought there (viisiting rights until we actually pick it up next week) and it ran real well. My wife shot quite a bit with it and started to get real comforatble with it. The SA trigger pull is light and clean and the DA trigger pull is long, but not too heavy. Once we got used to it it was easy to voercome.

The shop has a rental counter as well. Tonight was .45acp night for me. I already did a 9mm night a couple of weeks ago.
So, I shot the H&K USP, the full size Glock (never can remember the #'s), the Sig 220 carry....and a Wilson Combat (the "cheap" model)
I was in luck as the Sig was new in the rental and hadn't been shot too much yet.
So, the HK first. I thought it was a great pistol, being the first time shooting a .45acp. It handles well and once I figured out it's sights I was hitting the target where I was aiming the gun. Trigger pull was not hard, but I didn't like the mag release...hard for my thumb or fore finger to reach and operate. Otherwise, a fine choice in my opinon.
The Clock was, well, a Glock. I love KISS guns and this is that. For me the trigger seemed a long way from my finger...maybe the next size down might be different. I shot it reasonably well once I figured out it's sights.
Then I went out for another change and the guy at the rental counter hands me the Sig and say's now try this one.
This one fit my hand right away and was accurate for me right away. I really liked the ergonomics of it; mag realease was right there, slide release easy to reach, trigger smooth and easy to get my finger on. I was very pleased. Not saying the other two guns were'nt good, but this one fit me better and shot for me better.
So then, being halfway through my second box of Fiochi .45acp, I went back out for another pistol. He say's...now are you ready to try the best? I thought he was handing me a Kimber...It looked very Kimber'ish...So I went out to the line and shot it. I was floored. This gun was awesome. Very light trigger...I guess it would SAO style trigger w/ 1911 style pistols... It blew the doors off the other three hands down. Right off the bat I was drilling rounds through the same holes!
So, we finish off. The wife is done with the revolver and very happy. I'm ready to talk turkey about the 1911 style "Kimber" I just shot...then I find out it's a Wilson Combat...$2800...Not gonna happen. Not for awhile anyway. I'm not bying a $2800 pistol for home defense just to have the cops take it away after I use it. If I was a competition shooter I'd by a Wilson Combat. For my purposes I'll probably pick up a Sig 220 Carry.
Next week I'm shooting .40sw's and then I'll be able to make a decision on the next new family member.

I initially hated the H&K mag release because it was awkward and took too much effort. Then someone showed me that while it could be an ambi release your best way to use it is thumb and forefinger at the SAME time. A very light touch works beautifully. I now prefer this release.

For Wilson Combat, $2800.00 is NOT a lot of money, that is about the middle of the road in pricing.....

Would I buy one?  Never....would I like one?  Damn Skippy I would!

Actually, after checking Wilson's website, that is darn near the entry level pricing for them. Still...not gonna happen on my budget. That was one SWEET pistol.

I'd say you need to try some other 1911s first.  You could spend far less (Rock Island, Para Ordinance GI Expert, etc.), and still get a quality pistol.  Otherwise, SIGs are awesome, and you can't go wrong there, either.  My 2 cents.

About two years ago I picked up a nice Sig 1911 with night sights, match trigger...nice piece, and it cost about $850.00. They're probably a little more now, but I've seen them used for 6-700.
