1,000-pound hammerhead shark caught at Boca Grande
« on: May 08, 2009, 09:37:23 AM »
Port Charlotte fisherman Bucky Dennis caught a 1,060-pound hammerhead shark over 13 feet long Thursday morning in Boca Grande Pass. The 12-fathom-deep pass is known for its big tarpon and even bigger sharks. It is not uncommon for anglers to see their tarpon catches bitten in half by big bull sharks and giant hammerheads. To be more precise - great hammerheads. The species, found throughout most of the world's oceans, can reach up to 18 feet in length. In 2006, Dennis caught an even larger hammerhead - a 1,282-pound world record that made news reports around the world - in the same area. But after the fanfare died down, biologists with the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota discovered that the hammerhead was carrying a litter of 55 pups. "This shark was most likely also a female," said Brent Winner of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. "Sharks typically give birth sometime during the summer months." Terry Tomalin, Times Outdoors Editor

Bay News 9 is also reporting that on Wednesday another Florida fisherman also caught a hammerhead shark that weighs more than 1,000 pounds off Singer Island near West Palm Beach yesterday. It was almost 14 feet long.

I hope they were released. Hammerheads, and other sharks, are being rapidly depled by mostly Chinese long liners, who just cut off the fins for soup. As a fellow native Floridian I think the hammerheads (just like the tarpon) should be enjoyed and then released. That being said, wow, big damn shark!

were they not sure after finding 55 pups?  ;D

I know, it's all in how you read the story, but at first read it looks like a bunch dumbies that can't tell the difference.  ;)

LIGHTHOUSE POINT, Fla. (WSVN) -- One fisherman is recovering from severe injuries after a swordfish jumped in his boat.
John Barfield was one of four fishermen who set sail from the Lighthouse Point Marina aboard a 31-foot boat. They wanted to make a big catch, and they got one. "We were getting ready to lift her in and she flipped her tail, and the next thing you know, you're on the other side of the boat and a swordfish on top of you, angry and beating on you," said Barfield.
The 355-pound swordfish used its bill to break Barfield's collarbone and bruise his forehead. And the hook he'd used to reel in the really big fish, wound up really deep in the flesh above his right knee.
Despite all his injuries, Barfield was in good spirits when two paramedics arrived on the scene. "It was truly amazing to see his test of tolerance for the amount of pain that he was probably enduring to his leg," said Paramedic Erica Gleeson.
Even though he just survived a swordfish attack, Barfield is ready to get out there again. "I'd go fishing tomorrow if I could, but I will wait until the leg gets better," he said.
Barfield has three stitches on his forehead, and he said it will take six weeks for his collarbone to heal. As for the fish, well, Barfield said he is planning a big feast for family and friends.

In my commercial fishing days, we hauled a "very green" 68lb Cobia in the boat, bad idea,....

Had to break out the Mr. BGood, Rodney King approved mini aluminum bats to adjust the fish's attitude.

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.
