The 1006 is a large framed pistol designed to handle the very hot 10mm cartriage which was the predicessor to the much milder 40 S&W.

Does the "6" in the model number mean stainless steel?

Yes. As far as I know all the S&W 10mm were stainless.Somebody correct me if I am wrong.

Yes, third gen S&W autoloaders...

10 = caliber - 0 = frame/action - 6 = frame material

1006 = 10mm, DA, SS Frame....  http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg01-e.htm
