NEW YORK – The FBI arrested four men Wednesday in what authorities called a plot to detonate a bomb outside a Jewish temple and to shoot military planes with guided missiles.

Officials told The Associated Press the arrests came after a long-running undercover operation that began in Newburgh, N.Y., about 70 miles north of New York City.

James Cromitie, David Williams, Onta Williams and Laguerre Payen, all of Newburgh, were charged with conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction within the United States and conspiracy to acquire and use anti-aircraft missiles, the U.S. attorney's office said.

The men had planned to detonate a car with plastic explosives outside a temple in the Bronx neighborhood of Riverdale and to shoot military planes at the New York Air National Guard base at Stewart Airport in Newburgh with Stinger surface-to-air guided missiles, authorities said.

The defendants planned to "destroy a synagogue and a Jewish community center with C-4 plastic explosives," Acting U.S. Attorney Lev L. Dassin said.

The religious targets were the Riverdale Temple, founded in 1947, and the Riverdale Jewish Center, authorities said.

In their efforts to acquire weapons, the defendants dealt with an informant acting under law enforcement supervision, authorities said. The FBI and other agencies monitored the men and provided an inactive missile and inert C-4 to the informant for the defendants, a federal complaint said.

The investigation had been under way for about a year.

In June 2008, the informant met Cromitie in Newburgh and Cromitie complained that his parents had lived in Afghanistan and he was upset about the war there and that many Muslim people were being killed in Afghanistan and Pakistan by U.S. military forces, officials said.

Cromitie also expressed an interest in doing "something to America," they said in the complaint.

In October 2008, the informant began meeting with the defendants at a Newburgh house equipped with concealed video and audio equipment, the complaint said.

Beginning in April 2009, the four men selected the synagogue and the community center they intended to hit, it said. They also conducted surveillance of military planes at the Air National Guard Base, it said.

Rep. Peter King, the senior Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, was briefed on the case following the arrests.

"This was a long, well-planned investigation, and it shows how real the threat is from homegrown terrorists," said King, of New York.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said if there can be any good news out of this case it's that "the group was relatively unsophisticated, penetrated early and not connected to any outside group."

The defendants, all arrested in New York City, were expected to appear in federal court in suburban White Plains on Thursday.

They were jailed Wednesday night and couldn't be contacted for comment. The FBI didn't immediately return a telephone message Wednesday night seeking information on whether the men had lawyers.

I heard this on the radio today on the way to work, and I wondered to myself, "And DHS wants to watch the law abiding citizens."  Let me get this straight.  Disenfranchised convicts that converted to Islam wanted to blow up a synagogue and shoot down an Air National Guard plane because they "expressed an interest in doing 'something to America,'" and our best and brightest want to keep and eye on actual proud Americans.

Something's broken in Washington, but I think everyone here knows that.

You have to wonder if this is real or like those idiouts in Miami Ashcoroft was boasting about. If you recall an FBI agent had them swear the "Al Queda Oath", none of them could spell Al Queda, then had to buy them boots which they couldn't afford much les weapons, HE suggested blowing up the Sears Tower, which these guys thought was in Miami. If he'd just given them a grenade and told them count to five before throwing it we would have saved a lot of cash.

For eight years President Bush was called a liar, because RPG's, guided missles and trucks packed with explosives "are not weapons of mass destruction."   ???  Now they are again  ???

I know what their defense will be, and they will have all of the Pres. BHO administration and his backers backing them.  I sure hope the handcuffs were'nt too tight, or we will be giving them a million dollars each plus begging their forgiveness for the torture  >:(

They were guilty as hell, and crazy black nationalists to boot. However, the whole thing would have been border line entrappment, except that these braniacs tried to con the fed into giving them money, they weren't really intending to do much more than run a con job, but they wound up incriminating themselves quite nicely for a few hundred bucks on about 500 years worth of felonies. No great loss to society, but hardly public enemy number one.

Since you only became aware of anti American terrorism on 9 - 11 let me fill you in Al quada has been KNOWN to be recruiting in NY since AT LEAST 92. Remember the "Blind Cleric", and Ramzi Yusef from the first WTC bombing They were AQ,
in fact the basic idea for 9-11 was originated by Yusef and it got a hearing at the upper levels of AQ because of his uncle Khalid Shaihk Mohammed . Then there were the plots to attack  financial buildings in NY, to attack Fort Dix. Zacarias Moussaoui was not the 20th 9-11 terrorist as the MSM says, he was in fact supposed to participate in a second wave of hijackings.
If you rely on the MSM for your information you will ALWAYS be left looking foolish and uninformed.
 Here is a really basic reading list for you;
http://home.comcast.net/~antaylor1/usmccommandant.html
I'll list some others off the top of my head but I may not remember the Authors,
Black Hawk Down - Mark Bowden
McMafia, - Misha (someting)
Killer Elite
Shadow War- Richard Miniter
The Sling and the Stone- Some Marine Col. I forgot his name
anything by John Keegan
That's all I can think of right now, but it should keep you busy.

I dispute nothing you say. All I am saying here is that a paid FBI informant, turned a group of sad sacks into something that the brass could brag about in the press. Doesn't mean they aren't where they belong, but since when did you start showing such unwavering support for the feds? Its not like its the first time they made a mountain out of a mole hill to get some ink. Right wing extremists, muslim extemists, it al plays well for them. Frankly I am happy to see the McVeighs and the blind Sheiks behind bars. I just take federal LEO press releases with a grain of salt is all
