Hot weather limits my options on CCW
« on: May 23, 2009, 07:13:27 PM »
I live in Tucson where it is obviously hot for the sumer months.  So many of the CC techniques involve secondary layers of fairly heavy clothing, I am trying to figure out the best way to carry that isn't too hot.  For example, I've seen "tactical" vests that provide effective concelaed options but are not really practical for hot weather.  Jackets are clearly out of the question.  I'm thinking of something I saw at the NRA meeting that was basically a sleeveless t-shirt with a sewn in holster.  This could be worn under a button-down shirt with the top 4-5 buttons unbuttoned and stay pretty concealed.  Anyone have experience with these?  Do they hold up in form or start to droop under the weight of the gun?

Thanks

You did not say which one you saw, many of these do work and hold the firearm well, I have also used a belly band, but worn up high, for a draw through the short shirt sleeve, Cargo shorts and a front pocket holster also work well. Don't forget the man purse, safepacker ;D

I've tried the cargo shorts...  Feels like I have a cinder block flopping around in the cargo pocket.  I didn't think of wearing the belly band up high.  How did you like that?

I was out all day today with a .357 snubbie, t-shirt (loose fit), cargo shorts and a JIT slide holster.  Kind of like a cheap Yaqui slide type.  Never worried about printing and the shirt is long enough to cover everything.

The holster sits right behind or in from of my hip.  When I've got my 1911, I use a similar holster type that rides high.  Sometimes I wear a short sleeve shop shirt.  Just have to practice lifting the shirt and grabbing the grip to draw.

Why not just IWB with a long shirt that is not tucked, Like a Hawaiian shirt or golf shirt, if you are going to leave half the buttons undone then "Dress Code" is not an issue.

Big fan of IWB.  I can even get away with it with just a heavy duty T.  Prefer a camp or Hawaiian shirt though.  I have friends that prefer to carry IWB Mexican - personally I am not comfortable with that, but hey, different strokes...

J-frame in a desantis pocket holster is a great way to go.  As long as you are not wearing tight shorts, no one will know what you have.  Also, it does not flop around like cargo shorts.  The desantis holster works great for me and it cost less than $20.

I think going the "extra tight" route might be more tacticool. Leave the gun printing in your pocket. Don't worry, everyone will be so engrossed at how the shorts are cutting your nuts in half that they won't even realize you packing something else. ;D

Summertime I am in shorts and sandals as much as I can be.  I like IWB. I have spent many hours using Mexican carry. I also love my  J-Frame with Barami Hip Grip. Most of my "camp or Hawaiian shirts" are long enough to cover my Fobus Paddle Holster All of these worn with shirt untucked. On those occasions when tucking in is necessary I follow the sage advice of Walt Rauch. I just put a snubbie in my pocket. I have tried several in the pocket holsters and have not been thrilled with any of them.
