S. 1071, the Protecting America’s Communities Act
« on: May 24, 2009, 04:33:51 PM »
Got this from one of my Senators, Chambliss (R-GA) in a newsletter.

Guantanamo Bay Detainees Should Not be Allowed on U.S. Soil

This past week I introduced S. 1071, the Protecting America’s Communities Act, to prohibit President Barack Obama from bringing detainees at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base to the United States.

People across America are very concerned that this administration has not developed a plan for what to do with these hard-core terrorists once the detention center at Guantanamo is shuttered. Americans are concerned that they will be released into the United States.

It is important to remember most detainees held at Guantanamo were captured on the battlefields in Afghanistan or Iraq and were determined to be a threat to our nation’s security. Whatever their ties to terrorists groups or activities, these individuals should never be given the privilege of crossing our borders, even if incarcerated. To do so would be nothing short of an invitation for al-Qa’ida to operate inside our homeland.

On Wednesday I was interviewed by Chris Matthews on MSNBC’s Hardball on this issue.

On Thursday I tried to bring my legislation up for a vote, however, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) objected. You can watch the exchange on the Senate floor by clicking here.

"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison

So now Obama and the Dems want to bring the Gitmo detainees to American soil for trials ?
They are aware I presume that the entire purpose of the $ 10's of millions of dollars we spend on Border Patrol Immigration and that whole Visa thing is to KEEP OUT people like that ?

Dick Durbin is a tool.  How does he keep getting elected...where is he from...some district that has a colony of Martians?

Dear Mr. Bogan:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the closure of the detention facilities at the US Naval Station in Guantanamo Bay , Cuba .

President Obama ordered that the Guantanamo detention facilities be closed by January 21, 2010.  In a recent hearing before the House Armed Services Committee, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said that he welcomed this deadline.  The President's executive order establishes an inter-agency process, coordinated by the Attorney General, to review each of the detainees' cases.   When there is sufficient evidence for a trial, they will be prosecuted.  If convicted, they will continue to be detained.  Those who are found innocent will be returned to their country.  In some cases, there is not enough evidence to prosecute detainees who admit that they will attack Americans if they are released.  Secretary Gates assured us that these dangerous detainees would not be released.

To learn more about current legislation or about my voting record, I invite you to visit the Library of Congress legislative information website (www.thomas.gov).  There, you can find the full text of a bill or a summary, who introduced it and when, who is cosponsoring it, and where it is in the legislative process.  I also invite you to visit my website (http://shea-porter.house.gov) for more information about bills that I have introduced or cosponsored, and for issue updates, position statements, or to sign up for my email newsletter.

Thank you again for contacting my office.  It is a privilege to serve you in Washington .

Sincerely,

Carol Shea-Porter

Member of Congress
