Cassey Bennet - Student Activist - University of Louisiana

I heard about here on Tom Greshams podcast

she is having all sorts of issues about getting a club together for concealed carry students on campus

however I have not been able to find anything online about it

from the sounds of it she is being bent over  by the Uni  big time with what they are trying to do to here over it
Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. The only thing you can’t do is ignore them

University of Louisiana Monroe VP of Student affairs gave her the run around about signing off on permission to form Students for Concealed Carry chapter on Campus, wouldn't return calls, would not meet with her, etc. She testified in front of the State Legislature about the need for concealed carry on Campus and suddenly got a summons to appear before the schools Judicial committee, when she said she was bringing a lawyer, the VP suddenly is refusing to attend. Apparently the school had placed some her under some type of gag order.

Speaking professionaly here, there is probably more to this story. (I would like to hear it if anyone knows).
Three things I do know are that:
1) University administrators, like all petty bureacrats hate to be defied. That being said, their first, last and only commandment is CYA. This is doubly true at public schools. Punishing a student for speaking to their bosses, the legislature that controls their funding, seems out of character, since the repurcussioms are obvious.
2) Professors are generally liberal. This means that they break about 70-30 in favor of free speech (the thirty being the PC crowd). Even there, the principle of academic freedom is held dear as its something that stands between them and getting fired if they say something that offends whatever faction is in control of the capitol.
3) La. being La., and this being what souds like a school with mostly in state students, it seems unlikely that concealed carry is that controversial.
I have no idea whats going on, but I do have enough experience to want to hear "the rest of the story". (and god I'm dating myself) :P

I beg to differ on point 2.  Free speech is fine as long as it goes along with the political slant of the faculty.  I know of a couple of  doctoral students that ran afoul of profs. and their free speech wasn't so free anymore.  In theory they will agree, but if the stated speech isn't in line with their political beliefs they will move to censure.  I distinctly remember a movie of Ben Stein's that address this in a different manner. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expelled:_No_Intelligence_Allowed)
The person who has nothing for which his is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

You are on target, Brosometal. If anyone wants to know what the country will be like if the liberals/progressives have complete control only need to go to a college campus and take a look around. At my alma mater, the "NAZIs" were the feminist clubs that were established to advance eugenics policies and propaganda from Planned Parenthood and to further the aims of gay rights organizations. Whenever anyone dared to criticize their positions or policies in student government, the faculty sponsors and their henchmen would move to silence their opposition with smears and threats; the threats were usually cast in the form of "if you want to graduate from here, you better keep your mouth shut."

When Cassey told her story, I was sadly not surprised. The only thing that works against these people and their ilk is to get in their face and fight like hell.

Fullauto, I've been doing this for a living for a while now and I have never heard a threat like that. I also have worked for deans and department heads that would fire your ass in a heart beat for even implying it (for cya reasons if not professional integrity). Give me names, dates, departments and willing witnesses, and you'll see some folks lose their jobs. Frankly that kind of thing is about as acceptable as offering a coed "extra-credit" for a little sack time. It will cost you your job. Both happen from time to time, but it is a damn good way to get fired and black balled, because no one wants to hire a liabilty risk.

The fact that you never heard of it doesn't mean anything. But you not acknowledging it doesn't surprise me either. It has happened, does happen, and is happening. Several of my friends have received threats like this when they were in college. Of course, the wording is intentionally obtuse, but the point and impact is unmistakable.

It should surprise you fullauto, because you can accuse me of a lot of things, but not having professional integrity isn't one of them. I would turn in by best friend for this, or forcing himself on/taking advantage of or otherwise abusing his trust with a student or intentional plagerism (which for non-academics we view as the equivalent of  grand theft). Some things you just don't do. This is one of them. I'll forgive the implied insult but please do understand that the fact that I'm pissed off about it is representative of the fact that its just not accepptable to the majority of academics. We never promised to be neutral, because thats a lie. Honesty means letting the students know your POV. BUT having a POV, doesn't mean you can't, shouldn't and MUST be OBJECTIVE in dealing with those POVs that differ from your own. There is nothing more pitiful than a forty something with a PhD that is so insecure that they are intimidated by a 19 year old who disagrees with them. Most of my collegues agree with that. I'm sorry you don't have more faith in us, but you really should.

PS Just for the record I want to say this. I forgive you for the insult, because you seem like a good and honest guy. We might not always agree, but I'd still like to sit down and debate it with you over a beer. What you just posted though, is the equivalent of telling an honest doctor, lawyer, accountant, cop or contracter that they're a scum bag because you once knew a couple of jerks. Just FYI.
