My new gun
« on: May 27, 2009, 10:42:28 AM »
I just obtained (second hand from my wife who is a bigger gun nut than me) a Kahr P9.  I don't have enough body mass to easily hind a concealed carry weapon.  The P9 is the best I have found that meets my needs.  It is thin, hammerless, and I can carry it in my pocket without it looking like a weapon.  Trigger pull is smooth without the heavy spot of my Glock 19 or Springfield XD 40 subcompact.  Prior to this gun, the only thing I found easy to use and of a similar size was a Bursa 380 that I got a few years ago.

The only thing I question about the Kahr is there is not a safety that I can find.  I assume it is a trigger safety like the Glock but the trigger is one piece.  Because of this, I don't carry a round in the chamber.   I have been practicing the fastest/best way to get a round in the chamber.

I have found, even with my old man eyes, I don't need a laser to consistently hit a saucer size area at 18-20 ft.  I do wished it had a rail or some way of mounting a laser though.

To the best of my knowledge its Double Action Only.  The only safety is your ability to keep your finger off the trigger.  Just like a revolver, they can be carried safely with a round chambered.

YOU are the only safety that gun needs....

All the Kahr's that I have fired (not a lot) have had heavy enough trigger pulls that I would not hesitate to carry a round in the chamber in the pocket.  I would practice the draw with an unloaded weapon for a while and then find a place to practice hot.  Then again, if you don't feel comfortable with a round in the chamber...

Congrats on the "inheritance"!

Use a pocket holster like a Desantis that covers the boom button, and you should be good to go. That's how I carry my LCP loaded.

"An internal, passive striker block keeps the striker from moving forward should the P9 be dropped on its muzzle. Like most "slick-slide" DAO pistols, there are no external safeties as a long, deliberate pull of the trigger is necessary to fire the P9. Pulling the trigger rearward causes the trigger bar to be drawn forward, which in turn rotates the two-lobed cocking cam rearward. With the pistol loaded and at rest, the left lobe of the cocking cam holds the striker partially cocked, and the spring -loaded striker block drops into a recess in the striker preventing its forward movement. When pulling the trigger to fire the pistol, the left lobe of the cocking cam completes cocking of the striker, while the right lobe simultaneously depresses the striker block. When the trigger reaches its fully rearward position, the left cocking cam lobe slips from the striker allowing it to fly forward under striker spring pressure to directly into the grip proper. This makes for a slightly slimmer grip compared to the steel-framed guns. Compared to the K9, the P9's slimmer profile and reduced weight improve the already excellent carrying qualities of Kahr pistols."

Congrats, great pistol. As others have posted, get to know it, love it, and trust it. I carry my P3AT chambered, as the trigger pull is a long one on purpose.

Oh, I'm supposed to tell you that we need pictures!

Pathfinder is right. Get a pocket holster that covers the trigger.

My wife's big problem is she is a better shot with a handgun than I am.  Not good for the macho man image and I practice more than she does.  We have a building beside our house where I can shoot indoors.  It is also in the sticks, as said in the south. Anyway, when she got the P9, we were both looking for the same pistol.  She found it first and reluctantly, she got it and I didn't.  She recently got a "Smith Airweight" 38 revolver.  It is aluminum, very light and a bitchy little gun to shoot.  I never thought a 38 could kick so much.  A box of 50 equals a sore hand, especially a arthritic hand.

The Kahrs are great pistols, the trigger is heavy enough but smooth, it will not go off in your pocket, and only with deliberation once the trigger is applied.......
