Heroes, both of them!  Gene was actually in the military, while John Wayne inspired many to be in the military.  When you think of all the stars that were heroes:  Audie Murphy, Captain Kangaroo (I always forget his name), Lee Marvin, James Stewart, and Mr. Roger's neighborhood start who was a Navy Seal with tattoos (the reason why he always wore long sleeves. God Bless our Vets!!

  Sorry, but the Mr. Rodgers SEAL/Marine Sniper thing is a total urban myth.   He never served in the military in anay capacity, unless as a an ordained minister
