TALK ME DOWN!! SAIGA 308 Yes OR NO?
« on: June 02, 2009, 01:15:00 AM »
I have been sitting on the fence of buying one of THOSE guns (you know, the naughty ones) for a while now. I came across a 22" barrel NIB Saiga .308 with a 25 round surefire mag for $550. I am this close to buying it. Someone please tell me why I shouldn't or why I should prefer the 16" if I should. It's two in morning and I'm like an alchoholic calling his sponsor, because just one little drink won't hurt, will it? Help a brother out. ;D

Crack open another long neck and buy it.

Just to complicate things. I found an offer to sell me a Mossberg 590 with 8 round tube and ghost rings for $475. I want this for a FUBAR gun. Which, if either, should I buy? I've got a perfectly good deer rifle and a couple of nice hunting SxS shotguns. Thats not the issue. I'm looking for this purely for SD. PC has long since left the building on this one. As far as home defense, I'll probably go with my Glock. I would just like a "just in case" gun as a back up. Any thoughts? (And yes I can "afford" only one). :'(

Alas, no Saiga for me. I went to a gunsmith in my area today to talk about a problem I had with my Parker 20. He's an old guy and mostly retired and it was less a question of getting the barrels rebrowned than just an excuse to sit and visit. I mentioned my dilemna about choosing between the .308 and the 12 gauge for at best hurricane back up, and at worst killing zombies. He looked at me, mentioned that firing a .308 in a subdivision was a bad idea under any circumstances, and then things got weird. There was a cloud of purple smoke and all I could see was a giant pair of snaggle toed bare feet. He spoke in the voice of HAZ THE ENABLER and said "Son, I do have a  new in the box Maverick 88 security model, 8 round, picantinny rail drilled and tapped, 20" that a client didn't pick up. Its yours for $200". What could I say, I'm so easy its a good thing I wasn't born a girl. Somehow Haz, this all your fault! ;D Thanks for the help but I am temporarily benched from the saiga 308, but they seem to be a decent rifle for a good price. If anyone has opinions out there I would love to hear them, as I am not done yet. There is that three gun combo thing after all. ;)

I missed my chance to swing your vote, but I will chime in anyway:  ;D

The shotgun is a better first choice as a defensive gun. The situation has to be REALLY bad for a 22" .308 to be the gun of choice!

That said, it is probably not a horrible idea to pick up the Saiga as part of that "3 gun combo" if you have the cash and it is still available!
