I missed my chance to swing your vote, but I will chime in anyway:  ;D

The shotgun is a better first choice as a defensive gun. The situation has to be REALLY bad for a 22" .308 to be the gun of choice!

That said, it is probably not a horrible idea to pick up the Saiga as part of that "3 gun combo" if you have the cash and it is still available!

Thanks for the input Rob. I am curious about your opinion of the Saiga. As I said, I'm not looking for a hunting or sniper rifle here. I just want something moderately priced, with decent knockdown power,  that will shoot minute of bad guy out to about 250 yards and will reliabley go bang when I pull the trigger. Any ideas between the 16" and 22" barrels, or should I look at something else? As I say I've got a tack driving .270 so thats not an issue and I don't want to spend a lot of cash for a "just in case" gun thats also a fun range toy. I'm looking for the most bang for the buck, the going bang every time being the main concern. Thanks

Speak of the Devil.... ;D Seriously, I owe you thanks, I never would have looked at a Maverick if not for your earlier post on a different thread. Its just like a mossberg, except for the safety, which is a down side, but not a $250 down side. Ditto the aluminium receiver, I'm not planning on going hiking in the Hindu Kush anytime soon. As far as pics, I loaned my camera to my old man for his vaction so expect a bit of a delay.
Thanks Haz (bastard) ;D

I own a .410 and I know several gys who have the 12 gauges. I've only shot one of the .308s.  They seem to be very reliable guns, good weight and decent ergonomics. If you're not looking for a tack driver, the Saiga is a good choice, especially for the money, when it comes to semi-308. I'd recommend the 16", but I'm partial to shorter barrels in almost every application. Even my 2 Loooooong range .308's have 20" barrels.

Yes the bottom rifle is a Saiga .308 that really brings home the bacon. That old battle axe has seen a few hunts in her day. As for ammo 7.62x51 nato surplus works get.
