University offers protest degrees

ANTI-military activists have been offered training on how to disrupt Australia's top-level wargames with the US military in an official course run by Sydney University.

The University's Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies offered students a six-week "Peace and Activism Training Course" culminating in a trip to Queensland next month to disrupt Exercise Talisman Sabre.

The $500 course fee even included travel expenses for the six-day trip to Rockhampton to take part in the "Peace Convergence" for the first week of the three-week exercise.

An online discussion group by organisers investigated by The Daily Telegraph reveals the group plans to blockade Rockhampton airport on Sunday, July 12 and other direct action.

It also anticipates possible arrests.

In previous years protesters have tried to blockade the Shoalwater Bay military training base and several have been arrested.

The course's instructors included Dr Hannah Middleton, who is also a protest organiser.

However, after being contacted by The Daily Telegraph, Dr Middleton said late yesterday that the course had been cancelled.

She also said students in the course would not have been asked to take part in actions that could get them arrested.

"They are studying non-violent responses to conflict," she said.

The group is also preparing an "activist's handbook" for those taking part. However, it has not yet been distributed.

The 2007 handbook has been pulled from the organisers' website.

An existing manual circulated among members promotes the use of techniques such as tunnelling, occupying buildings and throwing pies

there are soooo many left winged tossers  in uni's now

and they want to teach them this rubbish now
Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. The only thing you can’t do is ignore them

Actually Tom, I was about to write a post about how this was an unethical abuse of a professor's position and a violation of professional standards. Telling a student your POV is fine IF you are willing to allow debate. Forcing it on someone is not close to fine. Offering CREDIT for following it is so far from normal standards that you can't even see them in the rearview mirror (and this is from someone who taught at a Quaker college). The only redeeming feature (if there is one) of this course is that protest tactics are protest tactics. They are like a gun. They'll work for the right as well as the left.

PS On that note I will recomend a book. Its called Rules For Radicals by Saul Alynski (sp?)
He was a left wing activist in the '60s and'70's, also an arrogant SOB. However the book is basically a feild manual for community organizing and tactics. Again, just like a gun, it will work for however picks it up. It should do fine for us 2A folks.

What you say about ethics may be true, unfortunately I can not think of a single college where they are applied , see the thread about schools trying to suppress the concealed carry groups.

A book I prefer is "The Poor mans James Bond" by Kurt Saxon, who, strangely enough, also was a militant leftist.

Universities no longer have professional standards. If the average college or university professor didn't have tenure to protect them, they'd be living under a bridge.

The old saying about" Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach." is even more pertinate today, than when it was first coined.

Hell I just got done taking classes on video games. ;D  You can easily legitimize them by putting 'The Art of...' at the beginning of a course title.
