I've liked South Dakota for some time now.

Recognition

The State of South Dakota recognizes any valid concealed pistol permit issued to a nonresident of South Dakota according to the terms of its issuance in the state of its issue. SDCL 23-7-7.4

Even though your state doesn't have reciprocity with South dakota, they still HONOR any other state's valid CCW permits.

Isn't it FEDERAL law that you have to be 18 to own a firearm and 21 to own a handgun? I might be mistaken but if not why is SD issuing CCWs to those under 21? At least thats the implication I got from the post. Don't get me wrong, I think 18 is fine, if you're old enough to go to war or be executed, you should be old enough to buy a beer or own (and carry) a gun.

You are correct.  However, owning and carrying are not the same thing.  Permits can be issued (for example) to LEO's who are below the age of 21.

LEOs under 21? Do they have to have their mom'permisson to take their guns home from work? ::) I mean no offense to teenage cops but that is a job that seems to require a little seasoning and maturity to be done properly.

Much like college professors, it varies from one to another.

Seriously, though.  I started as a LEO when I was 20 years and change.  I could be issued a CCW, but the department had to own the weapon.

And since at that time, most law enforcement degrees were TWO year degrees, there were many reasonably mature, certified, PROFESSIONAL peace officers who had yet to see their 21st birthday.

If they've got the degree that's fine. I kind of agree with the army on this. You will generally not make E5 or better (barring battlefeild promotion) in your first enlistment. Not because you're dumb, just because you need some experience first. Its also why they commision 20 or 21 year olds as officers. They figure that 4 years of college and living on your own gives that perspective. I agree with this (mostly) and think if you've held down a job and gotten a degree you're ok. I was just responding to the idea of a cop that just graduated from HS, went to the academy and was out on patrol. I think we would all agree that that is "less than ideal" to put it mildly.
