In my mind, NK could "wipe the US off the map", at least as far as 50 "UNITED STATES" are concerned. They only really need 1 missile and 1 warhead. They don't need advanced targeting. All they need to do is get it over the central US and detonate it around 200 miles up. EMP would cause the United States to cease to exist as a coherent nation. Everyone seems to think that we are ok because NK would "only" have 2 or 3 nukes and they can't get them over here yet or accurately. THEY DON"T HAVE TO BE ACCURATE! With EMP they could miss their target by a whole state and it wouldn't matter. This missile technology has existed since the end of WWII. Scuds are nothing more than slightly more modern V2 rockets. They would need only the most primitive of guidance and NK has seemingly already shown they possess that much capability. That is all it would take. If they could manage that from a container ship off of the coast of Cali or worse yet, off of Galveston, I don't believe we have the ability to knock it down. One bang that most people would never notice and all the power in North America goes away............forever. At least it would effectively be forever for a great many Americans who wouldn't survive long enough see electricity widely available again. We NEED to stop thinking in the terms of the cold war. Fighting the last 'war', the cold war, and not being prepared at all for the next one is going to do us in as a nation.

...... Rant off.

.........

Factual, encapsulated truth.  They can lighten what they throw by removing the equipment that would be useless for re-entry, like the heat shield, structural enhancements necessary to re-enter the atmosphere, some guidance components and the like to greatly increase the range of their threat.

.................a "Nation" is, ...........a large group of PEOPLE, lead or ruled by a PERSON, or a group of PEOPLE. ............many allegedly "smart" people lose sight of the fact that they are not dealing with "a nation", or "the populace" but are in fact dealing only with a small group who through thuggery and or corruption have seized the reins of power ?
One quick example, ..........the Iraqi Army and Republican Guard ......... the belligerent assholes of the area, like Syria, and Iran, looked at their nice, big, shiny war machines and realized that they were exactly the same equipment we had just blown to hell in record time. the same sort of "pause for reflection" happened after the 1968 Six Day war,.............

Restraint in the face of a violent threat is not a virtue, it is either cowardice or stupidity.

Well stated....
Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom.
It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.

Cooptire's post high lights the necessity for an unambiguous response. Unless they are especially dense, even without reading On War, The Art of War, or the Book of Five Rings, any body should be able to figure out that "the foe" they must defeat, whether across a battlefield or a negotiating table is not an army, or a nation, but the mind and the will of that nations Leader(s) That has been amply proven in Vietnam and Somalia. The reason that gangs are able to profit from extortion is because they have already demonstrated a willingness to employ violence. The fact that the same theory works in international relations is supported by the accepted version of the Cuban missile Crisis, Kennedy seemed prepared to use whatever means were needed, up to and including a Nuke exchange. The performance and determination of the Soviet forces were irrelevant because Khrushchev was not prepared to face the consequences.
