Assault on Councilwoman in the news...
« on: July 06, 2009, 07:25:55 PM »
Now, we have muggings on this bike path and the news doesn't carry it and the police don't work it like this. But a lib-tard councilwoman gets mugged and there are two articles in the local paper and the PD and Sheriff's office are all over it.

Assault on councilwoman casts spotlight on trail safety

In the bright sunshine Monday afternoon, bikers, joggers, women with dogs and walkers took advantage of the downtown pathway along the Santa Rosa creek.

They were on the path just east of Pierson Street, in the area where Santa Rosa City councilwoman Veronica Jacobi was assaulted and robbed Saturday night while riding her bike.

Those enjoying the trail Monday said they generally feel safe along the pathway, known as the Prince Memorial Greenway. But they also acknowledged concerns, and admitted they won’t be out there after dark.

“I only come when it’s light outside,” said Jeanne Sisulak, a nurse currently working in Santa Rosa.

Sisulak Monday was jogging the pathway with a friend, but said she usually jogs the area alone.

“I see people who are a little bit...scary,” Sisulak said. “There are usually enough people on the trail that if something happened there are enough people around to help.”

Santa Rosa police Monday continued to investigate the case involving at least two males who stopped Jacobi as she rode near Railroad Square at about 9 p.m. Saturday.

Jacobi, 50, was recovering Monday from injuries suffered in the Fourth of July assault, when she was knocked off her bicycle by two men who then demanded money.

On Monday morning the councilwoman declined to be interviewed about what had happened, indicating she was sore and not up to it.

“I just want to focus on getting all my parts working well,” Jacobi, who was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital, said. “I’d really like to talk about it in the future,” she said.

Police reports indicate that as she rode near Pierson Street, two young males standing alongside the path asked her for money.

She refused and one pushed her from her bicycle, causing the injuries.

They demanded money and her belongings, which she was carrying in saddle bags on the bike. She handed them over and they began to back away, Sgt. Lisa Banayat said.

Jacobi stood up and ran to her home nearby to call police. She left her bike behind.

Officers searched the area and found some of her personal items scattered along the path. An evidence technician looked for fingerprints on the items and the area was processed as a crime scene, Banayat said.

The robbers did keep at least one credit card and her mountain bike, which has a campaign sticker on it with her name. The stolen card was used soon after the robbery.

Detectives Monday were going to those businesses to retrieve surveillance tapes and see if they can get images of any of the suspects.

One man was in custody in connection with the case, suspected of possessing stolen property. Filiberto Carrillo, 35, of Windsor was stopped for a traffic violation Sunday by Sonoma County Sheriff’s Deputy Keith Covington. Covington found the woman’s credit card in Carrillo’s possession, according to the report.

Carrillo was booked into Sonoma County Jail. By Monday morning he’d been released on bail.

Santa Rosa Sgt. Rich Celli, who supervises patrols of the area said the officer bike team frequently rides the downtown path area.

“At night, it is dark and secluded. The most prevalent crime is graffiti,” Celli said Monday. “Occasionally there is other crime, but there is no trend at the moment.”

Riders should try to stick to well-lit areas and keep a cell phone within reach, Banayat said.

“If you’re going to ride alone in the evening on a secluded bike path you should take every precaution to ensure your safety,” Banayat said.

“Ms. Jacobi did the right thing. Once she was knocked over and they demanded her property, she gave it to them and got out of there.”

Tom Jackson, a Santa Rosa businessman, was sitting on a bench overlooking Santa Rosa Creek Monday during a lunchtime bike ride.

“I ride the trail a lot,” said Jackson. “It’s absolutely beautiful. I know it cost a lot of money but it’s great investment.”

Jackson said he’s been panhandled some and seen alcohol and drug use in the area. “I’ve run into enough people who’ve made me nervous, especially when you see people in a group,” he said.

But he’s also often seen Santa Rosa police officers on bicycles.

“They’re around. It feels a lot safer when you see them out here,” said Jackson.

Sean Busa also uses the trail at lunchtime from his job working for the City of Santa Rosa. Monday he was out for a brisk walk and stopped to talk about how he mostly feels fine being in the area.

He called the path a great feature but acknowledged he still uses caution at times.

“During the daytime sometimes you see shady characters. There are lots of places for people to pop out of,” as the path stretches farther from downtown, Busa said.

“I wouldn’t advise my wife or children to come down here after dusk,” Busa said.

Jacobi’s bike was an Aruba mountain bike. It is silver and has a bike rack and on the front has a “Veronica Jacobi” sticker.

Banayat asked anyone finding the bike to call detectives at 543-3590.

To bad she can't have a gun. I wonder how she likes be treated (Almost) like the citizens who are forced to live with the results of her asinine liberal policies.

+1 and MB has discussed how to do that on a bicycle numerous times.

"Why are you carrying a pistol?  Expecting trouble?"

"No Maam.  If I was expecting trouble, I'd have a rifle."

I'd love to present her with a video of that. I don't think she'd like it.

Maybe they knocked some sense into her. Nah, wishful thinking. ;D

Pretty standard reaction from the ruling elite at any level.  As long as it doesn't involve one of them it's a statistic - file the paperwork and move on.  Involve one of them and it is an unbelievable travesty - they will use every resource at their command in their pursuit of the BG.

Talk about urging people into a false sense of security!!!

Too bad that taking "every precaution to ensure your safety" is illegal there.
I love waking up every morning knowing that Donald Trump is President!!
