What Rifle
« on: October 14, 2007, 03:56:26 PM »
Interested to know what new rifle has anyone got recently that has become an instant favorite. You
know the one that just plain feels RIGHT,shoots great and you can't wait until the next chance to go out
and shoot away for whatever purpose it is intended for. Be it a Varmit, AR type, BR type, military or sporting rifle.

The one for me that lead to this question is a Remington 700 M40 Sniper Commemorative that I am now trying to
find that "perfect load" for and enjoy every time I handle it. :D

Sure has givin' me the ideas of what I want in yet another Varmit rifle. Rifles that do this sure add to the
enjoyment and broadening of one's shooting horizons and that ain't at all bad!  ;D

For me it is my new 16.25" DSA SA58 Para.  Here's what I've "modified" on it from stock

  • Inch style extended selector lever
  • Extreme Duty scope mount
  • Phantom flash hider
  • Extended bolt stop lever
  • Extended mag release
  • Sand cut bolt carrier
  • Izzy charging handle with bolt close
  • Rail and light mount
  • EoTech with QD mount
  • M249 SAW style grip
  • ITC cheek rest

Why do I like it?

  • The FAL is the most ergonomic battle rifle I've ever used.  All the controls are right were they should be and are crisp in operation.  The rifle "comes right up" and I don't feel like I need to contort to wrap around it.
  • Dang, but this thing is handy. While it isn't really much shorter than other full size rifles I have, the weight distribution is all in the center making it FEEL more compact
  • The trigger is the nicest I've ever seen on a FAL. Fairly light, crisp let off. There is a fair amount of travel and creep in the first stage...overall much better than I expected. It is as crisp in letoff as the NM trigger on my M1A
  • The Extreme Duty scope mount is very nice...good build, clear T markings...a high quality piece and seems rock solid
  • The folding stock is solid and comfortable. Good cheekweld...doesn't give anything up to a solid stock.
  • FALs rock!

I'm inclined to agree with KPR on the FAL.  I don't have one right now (it replaced a mortgage payment when I was between jobs :-[), but right before the last AWB I bought a Steyr-imported commercial FAL.  Standard length with synthetic stock & forend.  That one practically sang to me!  I was a career field-soldier, so I can run an AR pretty well, but I've never used an AR that felt as solid or fit as well as that FAL.  I'll have to do something with DSA, one of these days.

Last rifle I bought was an M1 Carbine. Great to shoot! But mine's a post-war universal, which launches brass on top of the shooter. Still, it's a great rifle! My favorite Rifle is my Norinco SKS-D Sporter. Takes AK47 mags, and mine has a fiberoptic front sight and an adjustable ghost ring rear from Williams Firesights. They pick up immediately.

Walter,

I'm an M1 carbine lover (I confess).  They are just little, great feeling, fun to shoot rifles.  I'm thinking of using mine on deer down here in FL where they weigh about 125 (little suckers!) and you have to chase 'em through the palmetto bushes.  The M1 Carbine would be the perfect handling gun for those conditions.

BTW why doesn't anyone load a spitzer soft point for them?

Okay...I'm convinced...I'm putting an FAL ahead of everything but the John Ross .500 maggie revolver.

Fell in love with on the spot? A classic, beautifully engraved and gold-inlaid Holland & Holland double rifle in 450 Nitro Express in perfect showroom condition. Unfortunately, it's locked in the ultra-secure gun vault at Wilson Combat and for some reason they wouldn't let me take it home...
