scary eye dominance thing
« on: July 18, 2009, 09:06:50 AM »
I just got an ugly wake up call. I am left handed, left eye dominant. I generally shoot pistols right handed with no problem, as thats where the controls are. All my rifles are LH, and I don't even bother with RH bolts any more, I sold them all. I do however train with my weak hand on SD pistols. I just got an AR with an eotech red dot. On my left shoulder, both eyes, or just my left eye, the dot is front and center. Mounted left handed, using only my right eye, I can't even see the reticle. Mounted right handed, I see the dot just fine out of my left eye. Both eyes open its ok, but not great. Right eye, nothing.
 Any thoughts?

Let me get this straight.

If you fire the gun right handed, when you look at the sight you get all  of these;

1. if only right eye open - can't see red dot

2. if only left eye open - see red dot fine

3. if both eyes open - see red dot but not well.

If firing left handed;

1. Right eye only - can't see anything

2. left eye only - all OK

3. both eyes - all OK

Sounds like you really got a right eye 'problem' of some sort if when you fire right handed you can't even see the dot with your right eye.

I am really shocked that it took you so long to figure this out. The instant that I read your first post I knew that you were more Left dominant. The rest of us are RIGHT. ;D

Pretty much on the money. Note, I'm not altering my cheek weld here. With a pistol, I can use my right eye fine to align the sights. With the red dot though, it goes from sight to no sight, depending on whether the left eye is open or not.

Going with Haz on that. Sounds like an eye problem.

I just tried it and which ever eye was directly behind the sight was the one that picked up the red dot.

Shouldered it left, both eyes open looking at target. Left eye was picking up the dot and looking through the sight, right eye was looking past and seeing target.

Exactly opposite if I shouldered it right side which is how I normally do it anyway.

I've been working with it somemore. IF I alter my cheek weld alot (irritating, as it slows down an instictive shot) I can make the right eye work on an RH hold. Still no joy on an LH hold though. This is probably all academic anyway, its just that I like to train for weak hand use on all my my SD guns as you never know what will happen if SHTF.

Not trying to be funny here but it sounds like you are cock eyed.  You know, when your left eye is straight forward the right eye is off center.

Just to clarify how it works for me:

Shouldered right side, left eye close/right open I can see the dot. Right eye closed/left open I can't see it.

Shouldered left, right eye closed/left open, can see the dot. Left eye closed/right open I don't see the dot.

That is how it should be. I think you are cranking your neck around to get your left eye inline with the optic.

No offense taken. I've been called far worse. ;D Seriously though, you may be right in terms of where the eyes focus, as opposed to simple dominance. I have to go to the optometrist for a checkup and new lenses next month anyway. I will ask him. I wonder if Wally Mart will mind if I bring an AR with an eotech in with me? ;D ;D ;D

Well, glad its not just me then. As I said, its probably all academic, but I do like to know that I can grab a weapon with either hand and use it if circumstanses demand it. Thanks for the input Tex.
