It was that NATO (at our request) invoked Article Five for the first time. It was to send a message to Al Queda that they hadn't just attacked the US, but the West, They also wanted to send a message to Russia that NATO was very much alive and well post Cold War. Take off the tin foil, it was a good thing.

Attack one of us and  we're all going to be all over your ass. Just proves my point. The REASON we flew all those missions was because they were under threat of potential Soviet invasion. Please explain to me how being threatened with invasion is a good thing .
