Just a question for any long range shooter.

Given the accuracy of 1 moa at 1000 yards is about 10 inches.  How long and how many rounds are required to sight the rifle in at that distance on a calm, 70 degree sunny day?

Took about twenty rounds to be able to hit consistently. Went out and set up early in the morning. About 60 degrees and completely still. Got the rifle sighted in on the target with 4 rounds and then make 5 consecutive hits. About that time the breeze stared to kick in and ten rounds later I still couldn't hit it. I think the lack of recoil in this rifle helps tremendously. With the heavy buffer spring, and the shear weight of the rifle itself, there is very little movement. There is also almost no muzzle jump. The recoil is straight back.

It always amazes and overwhelms me how many variations there are in the wind at long range. And then if there is any kind of swirling effect! Still it is an awesome feeling to be able to ping a target at that range. Especially with a semi-auto.

Though I've never hunted with a scope, the balistics involved and being off a miniscule amount of angle at that yardage and further are dramatic.  At 1000 yards, another 1/8 moa and your off target, correct?

Cool stuff, wish I'd gotten into the long range stuff earlier in my life.  It would have given me yet another reason to spend money.

I remember reading a few years ago about Hank Jr's place in Montana.  A visiting gun writer observed  an area by Hanks shooting shed and said he thought it would make a nice 1000 yard range.  The next time the writer visited there was a lifesize steel buffalo silhouette set up at that location that measured just under 1000 yards.  They ended up ringing the buffalo pretty consistently with a 45-70.  They even had a non shooter hitting it after a few shots.  Of course minute of buffalo is more forgiving than a 12" target. 

After reading that and about Hathcock's match at Camp Perry, I thought I'd like to give long distance shooting a try, but have not had the time and opportunity to do so.

I might could hit "minute of bison" at about 500, maybe!  Hit it at 1000?  Probably have a hard time figuring out which end was the business end and shootiing it in the butt....

Would be fun to try, just once but I think the longest accessible range 'round these parts is about 300 yards.

My range is good to about 110, nothing more.  Back in the early days when my eyesight was good and the '06, I'd go to about 250 with iron sights but not much more.  Mostly I carried the trusty old Savage .30-30 and 100-150 was about the max...

We have ONE range up here that I know of that is 500 yards. The rest are 200 or less.

I have one range that goes to 1200yds. But the terrain is such that past about 600 it is hard to get true scope settings. I used this range to get scope settings for my rifles from 100-600yds. Then simply go find a nice flat piece of prairie to go out further. I consider myself pretty lucky in that respect. We have a lot of public land suitable for long range shooting, most within 1/2 hour drive or so of my home.

Bismarck gun club has a 1000 yard range with berms for shooting every 100 or so. I have not been there since I moved, but it was nice when I was.

Now THAT would be perfect for long range!!! I keep asking my local gun club if we can actually set up steel every hundred yards, just for checking scope settings and bullet drop. Even offered to build the targets....No response.  I think I may just hang on to my $75 next year.
