HONOLULU – State officials in Hawaii on Monday said they have once again checked and confirmed that President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii and is a natural-born American citizen, and therefore meets a key constitutional requirement for being president.

They hoped to stem a recent surge in the number of inquiries about Obama's birthplace.

"I ... have seen the original vital records maintained on file by the Hawaii State Department of Health verifying Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawaii and is a natural-born American citizen," Health Director Dr. Chiyome Fukino said in a brief statement. "I have nothing further to add to this statement or my original statement issued in October 2008 over eight months ago."

So-called "birthers" — who claim Obama is ineligible to be president because, they argue, he was actually born outside the United States — have grown more vocal recently on blogs and television news shows.

Fukino issued a similar press release Oct. 31, but was prompted to speak out again because of the renewed attention on Obama's beginnings. Hawaii's Health Department has been flooded in recent weeks with questions from individuals and several national TV news networks asking for proof that Obama was indeed born in Hawaii.

"They just keep asking over and over and over again," Health Department spokeswoman Janice Okubo said.

The Constitution states that a person must be a "natural-born citizen" to be eligible for the presidency. Birthers contend that Obama's birth certificate is a fake, and many say he was actually born in Kenya, his father's homeland. They've challenged his citizenship in court.

One widely circulated YouTube clip of a town hall meeting showed a Republican congressman getting booed for saying Obama is a citizen. Talk show host Rush Limbaugh and CNN's Lou Dobbs have also raised the issue, and 10 Republican members of Congress co-sponsored a bill that would require future presidential candidates to provide a copy of their original birth certificate.

However, it appears Congress has moved on and has accepted Obama's island birthplace. The U.S. House on Monday unanimously approved a resolution recognizing and celebrating the 50th anniversary of Hawaii becoming the 50th state. A clause was included that reads: "Whereas the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961."

State law bars the release of a certified birth certificate to anyone who does not have a tangible interest.

However, Obama's birth certificate along with birth notices from the two Honolulu newspapers were brought forward even before he took office. But that's done nothing to shake the belief by many Obama critics that the president was born abroad.

The stupidity needs to end. If you want to go after the man, there is plenty of real stuff. Its like the Clinton haters (of which I was one, but not on this issue) who made themselves look like idiots over Vince Foster when there were plenty of real scandals there. Folks need to get off the grassy knoll and focus on real problems. The trouble is too many in the GOP either don't understand or can't admit why they lost and so are looking for a conspiracy or a scapegoat to blame, rather than accepting that they screwed up and need to fix things in their own house. Every minute they spend hunting this particular snark is a minutenot spent on building  a new GOP (one I and millions of others who voted NO in '08 might vote for next time). Its kind of sad.

Did it it ever occur to you that Oama is laughing his ass off over this? Letting his enemies whip themselves up into a lather, make a huge case over the missing birth certificate, and then say, "Oh here you go, I'll release it"? Why would he release it when its conveinent for you, not him? The kookier you're enemies look the better. cf my post above.

Didn't realize there was an issue over Michelle's work, but I will say that I wrote plenty of dumb stuff when I was in my twenties that makes me cringe now. That's how you learn. You wouldn't get me to post it without a court order though, as folks could and would use it to misrepresent me in terms of my views today. Its like when politicians are asked, Have you ever used illegal drugs? The first one that says That's none of your damn business, gets my vote.

Your off subject with the drugs.  School records and transcripts show thought processes and such.  Same as who you hang out with.

Michelle's thesis was a raciest screed (there's a surprise ).  Where did the money come from for them to go to school?  Who are they 'owing'?  When did he make all of his overseas trips, where did he go, and who paid? These are all legit questions.

FQ, There is more to this than just the "Birth Certificate / Place of birth question.
When his Mother remarried BO attended school in Indonesia. Under Indonesian Law ONLY Indonesian Citizens are allowed to attend "public" schools, (Such as the one BO went to) This would indicate that the StepFather ADOPTED  baby Barry, thereby obtaining Indonesian Citizenship for him. Fine and dandy SO FAR. HOWEVER, Indonesia does not, and DID NOT recognize the concept of dual Citizenship, which means that in order to obtain Indonesian Citizenship he (Or his Guardian) were required to Officially renounce his claim to US OR Kenyan Citizenship. Even if he later got it restored, (Of which there is no record, and it would have been open to the public HAD there been one ) BO was no longer eligible to LEGALLY hold the Office of President.
Another indicator in this direction is that all through his college career he seems to have been dormed with Foreign Muslim students. Why ? Did his records indicate that he was a foreign Muslim ? Fresh out of College this unemployed middle class youth with loans to pay back found the funds to travel to Pakistan which at the time was off limits to Americans. How did he do that, did he violate American law ? Or did he use an Indonesian Passport ? (Also , how did he finance this trip ? )
As to him laughing his ass off, I don't think it is people like ME that he is laughing at.
