If he was my employee, he would be fired on the spot.  if he was the in the private sector, he would be canned... 

Its better to suspend. If you suspend or put him on door guard duty at the station, you know where he is 8 hrs a day, if yu fire him hes on the loose. Also, theres a chance that while he's trying to negotiate to keep his pension he'll let something slp that he wouldn't in a straight up interrogation.
