AS many as five people died when a gunman opened fire on women taking a dance lesson at a gym in Pennsylvania, media reports said.

Local WTAE television reported that four people were killed -- the gunman and three others -- in the shooting at a Latin dance class at the LA Fitness Gym in Bridgeville, a town near Pittsburgh.

CNN television reported that five were confirmed dead today.

"There were shots fired at the LA Fitness, multiple people were shot and injured,'' Collier Township Police Chief Tom Devin told WTAE.

"At this time, we don't know who they are,'' he said.

"We believe the shooter committed suicide at the scene but we're not positive.''

About nine others were believed wounded, WTAE quoted police as saying.

One hospital representative told the channel that five women were being treated for multiple gunshots and were in critical condition.

A witness identified as Nicole told WTAE that the killer walked into an all-female dance class carrying a bag, turned off the lights, and began shooting from at least one firearm, which police said was a handgun.

He got off a lot of shots,'' Nicole said.

"People everywhere were screaming. It was horrible.''

She said that about 30 women were in the dance room during the evening class, while WTAE's reporter said that about 100 people may have been present in the gym in total.

"I turned around there was one girl shot in the thigh and one girl shot in the back,'' said Branson Holly, who was taking another class at the gym at the time.

"I'm still shaken because I was in spinning class and it could have been my class,'' Holly said.

"I could see flashes in the dark and that's when I realised that someone was actually shooting,'' another visitor to the gym told a television reporter.

WTAE showed footage of ambulances and police cars flooding into the area, which is part of a shopping centre

The gun grabbers are going to go crazy about this and make claims about how he should never have had access to guns, but the major underlying issue here is that the dude was a psychotic and he should have been in a mental institution and isolated from society.

Understatement is right. That guy was a complete and total psycho loser. It's real shame he took other people out with him. They didn't deserve that. My sympathies to the families that lost their loved ones at the hand of a desperate and insane individual. 

Maybe I am a bit callus but if he wanted so badly to 'exit' this world, he should have done so at home, alone, as he had been for the past 30 years.

This is a terribly tragic occurrence.  The signs were there, no one did anything.

Growing up in a small town with friends from small towns it seems everyone has a village idiot.  This guy was it.  Used to be these people were recognized for what they were and knew they were not going to get attention for being stupid, only a really good butt whipping when they started acting weird.  Today they are ignored until they pop.  You can always see agitation building in this kind of weirdo; in today's tolerant society no one stops to shake them and address the issues before it boils over.

Tragic! Yes, that guy was very strange. This really shouldn't be used by either side of the gun debate. They can say that it's another lunatic with a gun. We can say that it's another gun-free zone (as it is difficult to pack iron under danskins). The plane old truth is that you really can't stop all of the nut jobs.

It's even a little sad that a brother among us felt so alone, but since he already chose his way, I'm glad that he won't make it to trial. Those that were there and their families already have enough to go through.

I sure hope my daughters never cross paths with a guy like this.

Even the top cop in the town said that nothing could have been done to prevent this.  He would have found a way, one way or another...
