Palm Bay police plan to offer gift cards for guns as part of an effort to curtail crime involving firearms.

The decade-old program, popularly known as the “Kicks for Guns” program, will take place from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. Friday at Riviera Park located at 550 Riviera Drive.

“The idea is to remove unwanted guns from the community that can potentially become the target of thieves,” said Officer Ron Lugo of the Palm Bay Police Department in a statement.

“If we can prevent gun crimes from occurring by removing targets of opportunity, that’s a win for everyone.”

The Palm Bay Police Department is one of seven Central Florida law enforcement agencies — and the only one in Brevard County — participating in the program.

Officials say anyone can anonymously trade in the handguns for a $50 gift card. No questions will be asked, officials said. Officers do request that the firearms be unloaded and secured in a vehicle when arriving at the park for the exchange.

Police used to offer new shoes when the program started ten years ago. Today, gift cards are issued.

Anyone with questions about the program, co-sponsored with KISS 95.1 FM, can call 952-3400, ext. 4678.

ORLANDO -- In light of the Perez case, law enforcement agencies say this the time to turn in guns and possibly save a life.

We're just one week away from the 10th annual Kicks for Guns event where officers take in firearms – no questioned asked.

The event started when Real Radio 104.1 teamed up with Orlando Police Department.

Now eight law enforcement agencies are participating across Central Florida .

Many of the new agencies will be offering Walmart and Target gift cards.

Last year, the event brought in almost 400 firearms.

"If one gun gets off the street, it may save one life, and that's the goal. Granted the robbers, people doing shootings probably won't walk in on Friday and hand us their gun. But the guns that could be stolen which later become used in other crimes are the ones that we want," said Barb Bergin, the executive director of CrimeLine.

Kicks for Guns will be held Aug. 14 and runs all day.

Organizers with Kicks for Guns said the event is aimed at young people and preventing them from becoming victims of gun violence.

This is why they plan the events right before the start of school.
Kicks For Guns Locations

· Orlando Police Department -- Citrus Bowl at 1610 W. Church St .

· Orange County Sheriff -- Central Florida Fairgrounds at 4603 W. Colonial Dr. in Orlando

· Osceola County Sheriff -- Vance Harmon Park at 50 Country Club Road in Poinciana

· Sanford Police Department -- State Farmers Market at 1400 S. French Ave.

· Daytona Beach Police Department -- Dickerson Center at 308 S Martin Luther King Blvd.

· Palm Bay Police Department -- Riviera Park at 550 Riviera Drive

· Kissimmee Police Department -- 2211 W. Vine Street

· St. Cloud Police Department -- TBA
I say any of us with some cash to give sit just away from them and try to get first pick.
Also interesting to note, in one of the picts of guns turned in was an obvious BB gun looking like an AR, the orange tip gives it away.

The one with the orange tip is like an airsoft or something similar..... There are several other Pellet/BB guns in that pile also - If not all.

They are ALL pellet guns,  The one under the toy AR is just like the one I have, except that the under barrel pump handle is missing, the one on the far left you can see the hinge where the barrel breaks in front of the fore end, the third from the left has the pump handle in front of the trigger guard.  ???
None of them cost $50 new.
Palm Bay is where my Mother lives, it's all old people. What a load of crap. Not to mention a waste of money. Why don't they have the old folks turn in their valuables as well to remove "Targets of opportunity".

It has no intention of effecting crime. The purpose is to give politicians a photo op and the ability to say "Well I back / sponsored (insert pointless BS here )". The socialist "Liberals" pushing this crap don't actually want to bother the minorities who commit 80% of violent crimes, those are the people who get them into office.

I was watching this story on the news Sat morning and I saw a Garand in the pile of guns.... The only thing that pisses me off about all these buy backs is that they give these people $50 or $100 and then they destroy the guns. They said in the story that they are going to Jacksonville to be melted down. What they should do to help with the police budgets is take in the guns for the $50 or $100 and then re-sell them either at an auction or at some gun stores. Plus sometimes they are destroying classic guns that aren't made anymore.

It cost the cops a few thousand dollars but they could make tens of thousands re-selling them. In Daytona they ran out of gift cards and had to ask other business' in the comunitee to help out. If they re sold them instead of destroying them they would have plenty of money to cover the buy back. Plus I still can't believe there are people out there willing to trade a $200 gun for a $50 gift card to a resturant or a store.

Once again this is why our country is in debt, no one has any common sence....

I like the Crosman 766 Pellet gun second from left with the blue tape,...

Gun buyback in Fl. ----- Police blame the guns for crime.

Florida crime must be pretty light if they are blaming crime on those guns.

BG to clerk, give me all of your money or I'll start pumping this pellet gun.

Clerk to BG..........................................................................................BANG ;D
