Help with next on the purchase list
« on: August 16, 2009, 07:37:20 PM »
I am looking ahead to my next purchase (Mega millions over $150million Tuesday).
I've got a wish list.  Some are very specific...some are not quite pinned down.

Here's what I need help with:

Bolt action rimfire:   I've got a Savage MK II Classic, but it's not exactly giving me the accuracy I want.   I'll take it out this week and try it again, but I'm thinking of trading it in on:

CZ 453 Varmint
Savage MK II BVT  (short bull barrel)

What else?   (sorry no Ruger....personal thing.)

I'm not rich and most of the money will have to come from the sale of the Savage Classic.

Maybe I'm just too picky, but the Classic starts throwing the bullets around as it heats up.  Group consistency isn't what I'd like.  I don't think I should have bought this longer barreled gun.  I originally intended to get the BVT model but got side tracked.

Alf,

Have you looked at the Remington 700 SPS Varmit in .223?

There are several Remington Model 700 Varmits in .223

Here is a link for a Model 700 Ultimate Varmit in .223 with No Reserve taht is currently at $101.

Remington 700, "The Riflemans Rifle" You can find them on Gunbroker under $500.

Thanks, Kid, but this is for .22lr.  I want something to be competitive in any number of adhoc .22lr competitions (such as HandloadersBench or RFC postal matches).   I have a Savage 25 in .223 which I like.  I was leaning towards the Rem 700 for my next center-fire purchase, though.  But for this thread let's stick with the .22lr

Now, if money were no object there are the Sako Quad, and the Weihrauch HW66.  Both are expensive but extremely accurate for "field guns".  (FYI, Illingsworth imports Weihrauch into the Canada and US.  The HW66 is around $1,100USD before shipping, FFL and taxes.)   Of course there's always Walther  KK300 competition for a mere $3,300.

Alf,

Are you going optics or open sights?

Reading some reviews the Savage with the thumbhole stock, heavy barrel and optics is supposed to be he 'schizzle'.

I have a Howa 1500 in .243 and its a good rifle, and very accurate. Maybe you should consider a ruger m77 in 25-06 i cant get enough of mine.

I really like the CZ 452, but you might also look at some of the Savage Anschutz model 10's, imported by savage and plain jane, but a 64 action and heavy barrel, these were underpriced tack drivers.

Here is one on GB.
