I set fire to a Constitution tonight
« on: August 17, 2009, 10:31:00 PM »
and it was GREAT. Smooth texture and taste, thick easily drawn smoke and a nice slow burn. The Shiner Bock was a perfect compliment to it. A Bottle Rocket may have been a little better with the extra burn time.

Before I sound even more stupid and completely crazy, I am talking about an America Constitution. It is one of the line of cigars made by CAO. The CAO America comes in 5 different sizes, the Constitution being a 6" x 50 ring gauge.

Description from their site:

Made with two American-grown wrappers, CAO America pays homage to our homeland. Combining Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro and Connecticut Shade wrappers in a truly eye-catching "pinstripe" effect, CAO America features a full-flavored taste profile that is as rich and bold as the legacy of our beloved country.

A Brazilian binder is complimented by 100% ligero tobaccos from Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Italy, and the United States. The global combination of tobaccos yields a full-bodied, straightforward flavor that is specifically tailored to the American aficionado seeking a cigar long on strength, finesse, and aesthetic appeal.

I am by no means an aficionado, but I have been getting into cigars a little heavier then before. I am a dip of snuff man normally but cigars have really caught hold of me.

So, as I sat in the back yard with few beers and a nice cigar earlier this evening, I got to wondering what some of the other brands and styles of cigars the members of DRTV enjoy. I know there is at least one cigar guy with Jaybet on here. I can always use a suggestion for direction to go on cigars seeing how there are so damn many to choose from and I can't afford to try them all.

I traded in my cigars for the most part, but Upmanns were my favorite, smooth and nice, Macanudos were good too. I just didn't like the stale smoke smell that got into everything, I find a little dip to be easier if I want a little nicotine, but I will rarely turn an Uppman down.

Can't help you much on the cigars True, not a smoker anymore. I never was a big cigar smoker. I smoked quite a few boxes of Macanudos when I got on a brief cigar kick in my 30s. That was about the only brand that I smoked regularly. I tried a few others but they were not memorable.

I just couldn't bring myself to light anything called America Constitution. The entire time that I was smoking I would be thinking about burning the Constitution. I couldn't do it.

I'm coming to hang out with you guys.  I'm quite fond of Oliva cigars.  Oliva V series in double toro, full body, smooth, and at a great price (why does it always come to that), have always been a favorite of mine.  But recently I've taken to the lighter Oliva O's, more of a medium, and slightly spicy, but not over powering Nicaraguan smoke.  Also enjoy Rocky Patel's, Decades are my favorite, but also take to the Sun Grown, Vintage, Reserve, and their seasonal offerings.  I like other makers as well, but these are my staples.  And I also enjoy smoking tobacco from a pipe also.

The key with cigars, that at least works for me is, try a wide range of different smokes, in different bodies and characteristics.  I'd recommend Olivas, since they offer just that.  Go with a medium to start you out for a while, then try a full and then mild smoke.  After you find out what you want in a cigar, then branch out into other similar varieties from the various producers.  But never be afraid to try something outside you comfort zone, I've found that my taste in smokes has changed somewhat over time.

And one more thing.  I demand you pick up some bourbon to drink while smoking. ;D  Go get a bottle of Jack, Gentleman or Single Barrel, for smoking occasions.  And go buy a pipe, not close to the same thing as a cigar, but a nice, inexpensive, and well tolerated smoke.

Thought about that too Kid, but at the same time I was thinking about the fact that I have (for now at least) the right to sit out in my own backyard and smoke a nice cigar. The gubmint has already put their stamp of disapproval on it with their warning BS. I just tag it under one of the other "Freedom Documents" as the pursuit of MY happiness.

No worries about that Bryan. Wild Turkey 101, Jim Beam- Black and Jack D. are most definitely enjoyed with my occasional smoke times. It was just the fact that it was still 100º outside and a cold beer sounded better. ;D

Agree on the pipe thing and everyone likes the smell. On the bourbon bit, you sir are a heretic. Nice dark rum is the way to go. I like Cruzan Single Barrel or better yet Barban Court.
