5 inch shells
« on: August 21, 2009, 12:40:30 AM »
My cousin emailed me a couple pics of a shell she has.

Markings are:FSS
1-1941
5IN.MK,V
A Navy Anchor stamped i it

It is about three feet tall.

I'm guessing it is for a 5 inch gun but if anyone has any more info I'd appriciate it

Pretty safe guess

http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_5-38_mk12.htm

The .38 Caliber is a length measurement  there was some formula for figuring that . some of the Navy guys will have to help you with that.

IIRC its the circumference divided by the length.
I always break all the clay pigeons,  some times its even with lead.

There were some old destroyers, retired aroud Vietnam, that used rifled cannons. I don't know much about them, maybe Timothy can help?

The shell is dated Jan of 41 it's almost guaranteed to be a Keepsake some one brought back from the war

Get a cannon, cast a  bullet and fire that puppy off. Good luck on the primer.
