WASHINGTON – Government health officials are urging people not to panic over estimates of 90,000 people dying from swine flu this fall. "Everything we've seen in the U.S. and everything we've seen around the world suggests we won't see that kind of number if the virus doesn't change," said Dr. Thomas Frieden, head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

He made the comment in a C-SPAN interview taped Wednesday.

While the swine flu seems quite easy to catch, it so far hasn't been more deadly than the flu strains seen every fall and winter — many people have only mild illness. And close genetic tracking of the new virus as it circled the globe over the last five months so far has shown no sign that it's mutating to become more virulent.

Honestly, I tend to agree with the gu'mint on this. The fact that the news is of one or two fatalities here and there rather than dozens or hundreds, would be indicative. Even in Mexico City it was less than 4 dozen out of how many million? Plus, if you look at the numbers of how many thousands die from the flu every year (toddlers, the elderly, immuno-compromised folks etc.) I see little reason to panic and little recourse if you choose to.

Some numbers of deaths are a little higher than some may think. Flu season really hasn't started yet and San Diego County already has 18 deaths. Brazil has 557. For the US, the last number I heard was 127. Of course, the flu kills quite a few every year anyway. I saw the other day that MRSA is killing 19,000 people a year too.

I don't think there is cause for panic yet, but it is worth keeping an eye on. Keep some stored food and water in case there ever is a potential outbreak of anything that may keep you holed up for a while. Beans, bullets and gasoline…

Wash your hands and make sure your little kids do too. Doctors are around people with the flu every year and they usually avoid it with simple hygiene.

Sorry to hear about your friend philw.

What concerns me are the anonymous Presidential Advisers that contradict the CDC.....

"Never let a crises go to waste"
paraphrased,....Darth Rahm Emanuel

I call BS on the WH numbers....just like the CDC did so much more politically correct.
Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.

Given the opportunity and just to be sure, this may be the first year that I ever get the flu shot. Our family doctor is recommending it for our daughters and they never get sick.

This is less a pont of information than it is a query. My health is not great and my meds make my immune system less than excellent.I get the regular flu shot as a result. It is a "dead" vaccine.Still, I generally suffer a day or two's  drag from it. No big deal. However the swine flu shot is new. I don't know (haven't researched yet) if it's a live" vaccine or not.If it is, the downside is that you might catch the thing from the shot. Did your doc explain this to you? As far as the regular flu shot,I would reccomend it,I just try to get mine on a friday, so it doesn't matter if I'm worthless the next day.

That's a good point to find out from the doc anything we can about a vaccine. There really hasn't been too much information on the vaccine that I've seen. Isn't it also a "dead" vaccine? Are they even going to have a vaccine in time? Does anyone know anything about it yet? It's completely possible that it won't be ready by the time this thing hits. I'll probably get the flu, then be fine.

Last I remember hearing they were going to fall short on production so it was only going to be given to those "at risk".
That was a couple months ago.
