Don't know if I can blame the gun when the operator was an obvious idiot.

I agree.

Still dont like even the idea of a forward assist though.  The only thing it can accomplish is to make a jammed gun into a VERY BADLY jammed gun.  OR possibly cause the thing to blow up in your face!   :(

Either way it can really screw up an otherwise pleasant trip to the range.  ;D

I don't think I have ever had a problem that was resolved using the forward assist.

I've never needed to use the forward assist on my ar, but I would love to have on on my 1911 and 2011.  In the run and gun game it is common to have a slide not go all the way into battery, and once you get used to it you just slam the heal of your hand on the back of the slide.  Once in a while it takes a little meat out of your hide.

I've been told by a couple of regular three gunners that under the same conditions that cause it in a pistol it will happen in the rifles.  When your just an eighth inch out of battery it would be nice to just reach up and push with your thumb rather than racking another round in and hoping it goes into battery.

The bigger question is what was so tight that he needed to hammer the assist like that?  Since he didn't seem to really check it out, I'm assuming that he was just hammering on it.  Like I said before, I've never needed it on the ar, but on the pistols it is just a light tap to make it go.  I've even done it by just reaching up with my thumb and pushing.
If I appear taller than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of others.

Fowrard assist is not a problem solver, it's a problem waiting to happen.

If you have a jam, take the time to fix it properly. Don't ram the problem home!!!

On the range, should have taken his time and done it right.  In an attempt to look like a bad ass, he had to settle for dumb ass.  If you got to hit the bolt a half dozen times on any rifle, you've got a bigger problem then carbon fouling, which, I believe, was the only thing the forward assist was meant to solve, not catastrophic $%^# up's.

That and letting you silently chamber a round by working the charging handle slowly then tapping the FA. I never did it, but that was theory we were taught anyway.
