Good post, Badger! I've been eyeing those Big 5 guns too, so this is something to think about.

I've looked over MANY different Mosin Nagants in stores that were priced anywhere from $79, to $149.  You USUALLY get what you pay for.  The cheaper rifles will undoubtedly have rusted out bores, much worse condition stocks, some will even be missing parts!  At any price most are not good "pieces of history" as they've been reworked by importing armories (look for a shiny silver muzzle - 91/30's chopped down).  The price you mention isnt likely to change anytime soon considering the 91/30 and its variants are probably the highest production bolt rifle to ever exist.

They CAN BE great rifles!  I've got an M44, and a 91/30.  Look VERY closely before you buy!!!  You'll find more weird things about the gun when you get it home than you could ever imagin!  I bought my 91/30 because the action was VERY smooth (something you really need to look for as they vary GREATLY!), got it home and found out from its stampings that EVERY piece of the gun was made in a different year, plant, or even country!  Bad thing is that the whole gun was in beutiful condition.  UNTIL I cleaned all the grease out of the bore.  It's pitted up worse than a gravel road.

$129 is not an out of the ordinary price for ANY model of Mosin Nagant.  You need to look over their inventory and see if those particular rifles are worth even a penny.  Before you frown on the 91/30's for being as long as a telephone pole, let me say they are the best balanced rifle I've ever held in my hand!  And handle BEUTIFULLY!  Even better than their carbine siblings IMO.

If you pick a good one...  Their SUPER fun to shoot!!!  ;D  And easily my favorite of all to take to the range for a day of GIANT muzzle flash, and loud noise fun!  ;D ;D ;D  Good luck!

I must have been really lucky. I have (2) M44's and (3) 91/30. I bought them online sight unseen, all 5 have stamped matching numbers and I can't tell if any of them had ever been fired....... and for $69 and $79 each

That is the hobby.

Then you need to start on Swedish Mausers.

Here is a couple sites to get you started.

Disclaimer:  Warning!  Swedish Mausers are highly addictive.  The poster assumes no liability for running amuck, spending more money than what you have, and becoming obsessed with acquring enough Swedish Mausers to outfit a platoon.  Welcome to surplus rifles.  Good luck you are on your own.  You have been warned.

But a Springfield is $700 not $70.  ;)

times that by 10 in aus, if you have the right category licence that is!.

$70 I would buy several that way you have better odds of finding a real shooter  ;D and more is definately merrier.

If its legal I will buy and ship for you sledge, you pay shipping, no charge, all I want is $10 to buy as six pack afterwards. If it's Aussie legal, I will acquire, box and ship the damn thing, just to put my finger in the eye of government that doesn't trust it's citizens to be armed (Hell I don't care if it isn't Aussie legal as long as I can't be extradited as I don't have any particular desire to know what kangaroo tastes like or get my ears cut off in D block). No offence, because I respect your nation, but the gun confiscation bill ya'll passed is grounds to start thinking about the extended camping trip. Its weird, different cultures have different tipping points about when the state has gone too far. Sometimes its foriegn policy, sometimes abortion or women's right's or civil rights, sometimes guns. I think it will seem strange to Aussies, but natural to Americans, when I say that if the feds say I have to turn in my guns, they'll get them when they're empty. That's not tough guy BS either, its just the fact that the right to keep and  bear arms is pretty much ingrained in our culture. Its how we grew up and if you challenge that in a serious way, you have a problem. Again, different cultures, different laws. :-\

Thank you for your kind offer, you know I am nearly tempted to take you up on the offer however I would not submit you to the BS paperwork war that would ensue in order to get the damn thing here, it would be cheaper to buy one locally.
BTW I agree with your sentiments, hopefully one day not so far away there will be enough people sick and tired of the BS in this country to stand together (another Eureka Stockade).
Besides I think we have an extradition teaty with the US after all we got a guy called Don Lane and you guys got Helen Reddy and that was in the 70's  ;D
A wise american once said a little revoloution every now and again is a good thing, although saying such things now makes the natives nervous.

PS its not mandatory to chop ones ears off in D block, its more important to have a soap on a rope! LOL

PSS re nagants check the price

Sledge,

That is a 91/30 sniper rifle.  They go for more than the regular MNs here, too.

They are list in SOG for $399 (regularly $495), the M44 carbine is $179,  regular 91/30 is $70, 91/30 with Hex receiver $80, there are others but that is the price range.
All tipoes and misspelings are copi-righted.  Pleeze do not reuse without ritten persimmons  :D
