You've got the right bait.  Just tie a string around the foot of a couple of chickens and keep a sharp eye out.

No tellin' what you might call in with live bait.
Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom.
It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.

If your within 50 feet he'll either smell, or hear you.  Do much more than breath, and the little demons can pick up on both.  Their eye sight is good enough that he's likely to see you easier than you think.

They can be a real challenge!  But then I was sitting at the base of a tree eating beef jerky one deer season and a red fox ran in through the underbrush so fast he actually stepped in my lap before either of us knew what happened!  He kept running on past, and I about crapped my pants!  Teriaky seems to be a favorite flavor! ;D

If the coyote that's giving you problems is a male, it will attract him. Either way it should help getting him.

Trapping is the most effective way to get things done... not as much fun as a head shot, but it will get you the end result you are looking for.

That was ruled out since he has dogs.
