Not your typical gun owners

Two "Life partners" arm up to feel safer and because of fears over changing gun laws.....

Quote
It was time, Beth Salvesen felt, to buy a gun.

She'd thought about it for a long while, and finally pulled the trigger. "It's my right and I'm 50," the Greene County resident said.

Salvesen started the permit process last December and by the end of June, she had her permit.

She is now the owner of a Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver that she bought for $550. Her partner, Sherri Roff, also 50, went through the process with her and owns a Ruger Lightweight Compact Pistol .380 that runs $350.

Roff, the director of a rehabilitation center for women in Albany, said having the pistol "makes me feel safer. I have a much better chance of defending myself. Hope I never have to use it."

"We didn't want to wait any longer because you hear in the news the gun laws could change," said Salvesen, who works in construction as a painter. "I don't know if that's something against the President that the Republicans are saying or whether it's the gun people because they're the ones benefiting from it."

The two women from Freehold have joined thousands of Americans this year in becoming first-time handgun owners.

I hate to admit it, but it is right here in "gun friendly" New York State. :(

Guys
I might have said this once or twice before.........but this is exhibit 2,567 why your liberal bashing is counter productive. Yeah, you don't like the social liberal program, but do you want more or fewer folks to support the 2A? Do want these women to feel comfortable if they logged onto this site or not? Its not being PC, its being smart. I'm not talking ideology. I'm talking math. I'm not a social conservative, I don't even play one on TV, but I am pro-2A. Do you want my support or don't you? Its just that simple. Grow the pro-2A movement, leave the extraneous crap to the wayside or we all lose, its just that simple.

Yes and it is such a wonderful experience.

Get fingerprinted(Several Copies) Get to list four folks as references and they must SIGN the application. Have the state obtain your military records and call on your neighbors and family to ask about your stability and if THEY approve of your possession of a handgun. Undergo an interview. Generally get treated like a criminal and pay a few dollars to the local PD.

And then you can only own a handgun, not carry it without a lot of BS. And every handgun is listed on your license by serial number, don't get caught with a handgun not listed. And you must have a permit to even handle a handgun, your wife breaks the law if you let her shoot and she does not have a permit.

Go into a gun shop and want to look at a handgun, you better have a license and show it to the folks behind the counter.

Unless you live in a rural county upstate and you contribute to the local judge's election fund, forget about a carry permit.

A little known fact is that Rudie Giuliani revoked almost all the carry permits in NYC when he took over as EmperorMayor of NYC. Only folks with influence (Celebrities) can have carry permits now.

NY State is a Third world country. You are treated like a subject not a Citizen.

When I applied my file was over an inch thick stamped in big red letters NO RECORD. They did more thorough check that I got when I obtained a security clearance in the Army!

Then the process of buying a handgun. Get Serial number and info from gun shop (Naturally they want to be paid up front) Go to PD or Sheriffs dept with info. Pay fee to register gun, take paperwork back to gun shop, then take paperwork and gun back to PD for them to check, enter on your license and generally treat you  like poop.

Sounds like buying it from a street vendor would be easier which, if I were ever be unlucky enough to have to live in NY state, I would do in a heartbeat!

But I have choices and I don't have to live there.  If MA gets that bad, I'm only 29 miles from NH and don't mind the commute to work should it come to that.

Good for these two women!  Hopefully, living in the Catskills, they will never have the need for them but at least they know their rights!

Not all counties are that bad in ny, where I live it took about 4 months to get a full carry permit. When I want to buy a new pistol I buy it and take the info on it to the Sheriffs office to add it to my permit. In about a week or less I get the permit to pick it up. There are some judges that will restrict your permit to "Target & Hunting" only, But there is nothing n the state law that allows them to do this. Yes I know this shouldn't be like this but you work with what you have.

FQ, more supporters are always good, but sometimes tweaking or bashing liberals HAS to happen.  I posted the video about the two guys carrying the AR's at that rally down in Arizona on my facebook page, just to celebrate the  freedom of the moment.  My EUROPEAN SOCIALIST step-sister sent about ten messages marking each major assagination in the US.  And she ended it with Yeah some freedom.  I went back through her list marking each one on their particular brand of liberalism and through in the Black Hand that started WWI the school shooting a couple years ago in Scandinavia where the little commie did it to celebrate Red October.  I ended it with, "you know, you've convinced me liberals and other marxists shouldn't be allowed to own firearms."  still waiting for a response.

FQ, I meant nothing derogatory to the two new gun owners.  I was referring to the crappy policies in my home state of New York.
