Took me a while to find this show - GLAD I DID!
« on: September 17, 2009, 09:41:28 AM »
I've been a casual shooter for over four decades. I used to do quite a bit of IPSC at one time, but lately just target stuff. I was really happy to find this show. It is very down-to-earth with potentially life-saving advice that everyone should be listening to.

Mainstream media will typically advise you that disaster preparation consists mainly of stocking up on batteries and drinking water. In the real world, we all know that's not enough. "The Best Defense" tells it like it is. Really a terrific show.

Is it possible that you could include any legal advice on self-defense situations? Let's say a major hurricane happened (like Katrina) and there's virtually no law enforcement available. Are self-defense laws still treated the same? Is there any less duty to run when law enforcement is not there to help? God forbid, if you do have to shoot someone, but there's no phone service and no police around, what do you do then to protect yourself from future lawsuits? Obviously, the first objective is to survive the disaster, but legal issues come into play as well.

Keep up the great work!

Welcome Chevy SS.  The forum you will find is a great time waster and full of Info (bs or not).

I didn't find the site until this year also and it has been great! As far as the questions go.  The older members will be able to either help or direct you to the right thread.

Again Welcome aboard and GOOD LUCK

Welcome Chevy, I appreciate your feedback on the show.

I understand your interest in the legal aftermath of the use of force during survival situations. My Rule is that the law doesn't dictate my actions, my need to take action to protect myself or other does. This, of course, is in line with the law's view (the perception of opportunity & intent for the badguy to kill me or someone else usually justifies the use of lethal force, for example). In regard to something like "Castle Doctrine", I've always dismissed the idea that you should shoot someone because the law says you "can" once they are in your house if you articulate fear. The reality is that you should shoot someone when you perceive the need to.

I apply the same guidelines to the disaster situation.... of course, I am not a lawyer and certainly not giving advice with the legal aftermath in mind.

You might contact the Armed Citizen Legal Defense Network and ask their opinions.

Some one asked Tom Gresham a similar question on the 9-13 pod cast of "Gun Talk", his answer boiled down to basically that you have to be alive to be sued or charged. If the BG kills you the legal consequences will not matter to you.

Rob (and others), thanks for the replies.

I understand the first duty is to survive. And I certainly am NOT looking for any excuses to shoot someone. I'd much rather end a confrontation as allies rather than deadly (or dead) enemies.

But I think it would be awesome if some generalized legal opinions were interjected here and there.

Bottom line - keep up the great work. This is truly an amazing show........

PS - do you guys ever intend to talk about the financial system potential breakdown? Should people have a stash of cash? Or gold?

Best source for that sort of info is Massad Ayoob's book, " In the Gravest Extreme" He has an updated book that covers that and pretty much all other aspects of Concealed Carry, I believe the title is "Gun Digest Guide to Concealed Carry".
