Gun noise inside house
« on: September 17, 2009, 05:17:23 PM »
I have wonder for years what it would sound like to discharge a useful defense pistol inside my house.  Since I live in the sticks, I opened the window in our bedroom, stood against the far wall and let my Springfield S&W .40 rip.  Gosh almighty.  My ears are still ringing and that was three days ago.  It makes me wonder if I might be better of throwing my pistol at someone that has broke into our house.  I never have seen the people on CSI Miami holding their ears ;D but I would be stuffing chewing gum or RedMan chew or even mud if I had the chance.  What do LE people do?

Some day I'll learn to ask first and try latter.

Now you know. I shot my Dad's .44 ruger flat-top out of an old house we used on a deer lease when I was a kid. I couldn't hear for days! It just takes one time! Here's your sign! ;D

When lives depend on it you won't even HEAR the bang, or notice recoil.
That being said several people on here have recommended keeping a pair of electronic ear muffs beside their Home Defense gun.

LEO's almost NEVER discharge their sidearms.  If they do, it's gotten really, really bad and there is a ton of paperwork to fill out afterward.

Ask a cop how many times in their career they fired their service weapon outside of a range.  The answer will most likely be NEVER.  CSI is a rediculous TV show, let's hope people don't really take it seriously.

True except for the SWAT teams - and they use ear protection and/or suppressed weapons.

Now you know why MB has been on a suppressor roll of late, touting the values and lambasting the Feds for including them with Class III and such.

you get used to it. the worst one's are flash bangs, i must have had the wrong end of around 100 of those during my time on the CT team, we would practice all day constantly hitting every room with the things, you dont even blink after a while. saying that i am a little deaf in my right ear.

Jackel and Tom have it right. If I ever fire a gun in my house the last thing I'm worried about is noise. My ears may be ringing but someone else is going to be bleeding out (plan A) or, I'll be bleeding out and a crook will have a shiny new Glock (plan B). Either way, noise is not an issue.

I understand that an old Ruger Hawkeye single shot pistol in .256 Win. magnum fired from inside a Volkswagon Beetle at a woodchuck is quite deafening.

I shot my .357 indoors a few weeks ago with 158 gr FHS and it was not too much fun with ear plugs.  I don't use muffs indoors, I don't think they provide as much protection.  I should have worn both that day.  The .38's are much quieter.
