Frantic 911 call: bull elk attacks woman
Web Staff KDVR Denver
September 23, 2009

EVERGREEN, Colo. - A frantic call to 911 was made as a woman was attacked by a bull elk. She was in hospital Wednesday following the attack which happened outside her home in Evergreen Tuesday.

The 47-year-old woman was in her car leaving her house in Troutdale Estates but got out of the car to go back inside when the elk attacked her.

She called her husband, Ken, as it was happening. He then called 911 and as you can hear in the tapes, he frantically searched for her.

The woman says the elk kicked her in the face. She is expected to recover from her injuries.

Click below to listen to her husband's call to 911. Here is a transcript of the call:

911 operator: What's going on there sir?

Ken: A bull elk is attacking my wife. She called me on the cell phone. The last I heard was a lot of screams. I'm driving there now, I'm gonna' keep you on the phone. I don't know if she's hurt... I don't know if she's hurt, there was screaming then nothing. I don't know where she is... Diane! Diane! Diane hey!

911 operator: Do you see her?

Ken: She's hurt.

911 operator: She is hurt? Ken can you hear me? I need you to listen to me so that I can help you help her, okay? What kind of injuries does she have?

Ken: I don't know... she's banged up, a little bit of bleeding, she's in shock.

The bulls are rutting now!

That's some nature in your face. I'll bet she was in shock. The most wildlife that I have to worry about is maybe a city coyote on trash day. They've actually had a couple of attacks this week up in LA. One, on an adult male.

When I lived on the west side of town the deer were as thick as flies.  I lived in a townhouse and when I'd walk down to the mailboxes during rutting season I would occasionally have a buck stand his ground and lower his rack at me.  I would choose to take a different route on those occasions.  Deer attacks are not uncommon around here.

I believe I relayed the story of the rut crazed bull moose that attacked an RCMP cruiser (full size Blazer).  However, for those that missed it, a mountie had pulled over a vehicle and left his lights flashing while he spoke with the driver.  While he was "visiting" with the motorist a bull moose charged down hill out of the woods, ROLLED the Blazer, and stomped it into submission.
