.556 enough gun for hogs? yes or no?
« on: September 29, 2009, 01:21:53 AM »
I live in South Florida where we have no shortage of wild pigs. I at first, was looking for an EBR in 7.62x39 as it would double for hunting pigs (with a 5 round mag to stay legal) no problem. Then I got a great deal on an AR, out went the AK, in with the DPMS for reasons of ammo and mag availability. I'm still not sure that was the right call, but done is done. The question is, is the .556 enough gun for pigs at close (30-75 yards) range, or do I stick with the .270? I know the .270 will do the job, but I am looking for a quick handling brush carbine. IF the AR with eotech won't do that I think I should consider a trade in. I want a quick to the shoulder one shot stop (yes I could use the 12 gauge, but thats not the question. See, shoulder, apply red dot, bang, and done. Thats what I want.).Any experience? Any stories?

No.  Been there, tried that in SC and TN.  .223 will result in you loosing half your pigs.  30-30 lever action works good, I tried my 270, but its a bolt gun, and proved to long barreled for "quick pig action". ;D  Plus I was lucky my buddy followed up with a quick second shot for me more than once.  Pigs can be tough!!  And if the one you shot doesnt go down you got about a 30% chance he'll come after you.  If he doesnt, his friends will!  This is the whole reason I bought my AK 15 years ago, and you'd think everything about the gun had been built to purpose.  Perfect gun for the job!

Then again, I've heard people talk about hunting them with bow's!  Heard some really funny "I got mauled" stories too!  Glad it wasnt me.

You make the call, have a friend with you though!  And a camera!!!

a 22 short will work, if you put it in the right spot.

You saw the pic of my scar in haz thread right?

that pig took 2 arrows and 3 30-06  and still managed to do that.( fell down dead right after he hit me)
I always break all the clay pigeons,  some times its even with lead.

5.56 will NOT do it.  .270 yes.  20 gauge works well (so do bayonets ;) ).

Seriously the guides always drool over our leverguns.  38/357 is fine.  I have a 454 18 inch and HazJr has a 44 mag 20 inch.

Oh, 5-point-5-6. Based on the title, I was thinking a .50 cal was probably on the large size for a pig.  ;D  ;D  ;D

Maybe 5.56 would work - on full auto?

Rather than trade the gun, why not get another upper in 7.62X39 or 6.8 ?

Like Tom said, why not get another upper?  You can get all sorts of calibers, heck even a .50 Beowolf if you want, and that is one slamming cartridge.
