Pastor Shoots, Wounds Intruder at Detroit Church

DETROIT -- A retired police lieutenant-turned-pastor has shot and wounded a man who allegedly broke into his Detroit church.

Detroit police Sgt. Eren Stephens says the pastor had gone to Westside Bible Church Sunday evening and found the intruder inside the building. Stephens says the man began swinging an object at the pastor who pulled a handgun and shot him in the abdomen.

The man was taken to an area hospital, and his wounds are not believed to be life threatening.

Stephens says the pastor was not injured and is licensed to carry the handgun. Stephens didn't release additional details.

It is unclear if the pastor called police following the shooting or if the church's security company reported the break-in after a burglar alarm was triggered.
