The next evolution in revolvers???
« on: September 30, 2009, 12:23:44 PM »
Very interesting post over at The Firearm Blog:

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2009/09/30/chiappa-rhino-revolver/

Its the Chiappa Rhino Revolver. A .357 that fires from the bottom chamber in an effort to lessen recoil

Specifications
Caliber    357 Mag.
Capacity    6 rounds
Barrel    2"
Rate of twist    1:18.5"
Weight    24 ounces
Everything I needed to learn in life I learned from Country Music.

Shouldn't that be posed in the "Ugliest Gun" thread????

I just don't see how firing from the bottom will lessen recoil other than putting the impulse lower in the hand.

Damn that thing is ugly

I need to either see an actual example or a clearer picture, it's hard to tell WHERE the barrel is in all that steel, also, if it fires from the BOTTOM cylinder, how does a hammer at the TOP of the cylinder hit the primer ?
Last question, WHY ?   Conventional revolvers have worked out pretty well for the last 153 years using the KISS principle that lessens the possibility of failure.
This belongs with the designers OTHER failure the Mateba, in the class of ugly oddities.

Something one of my engineeering professors said in college comes to mind...

If your designing some thing, and it does not end up being bueatiful, you did something wrong.

Yes, its ugly..... wow you people are simple. ::)

I also ask "Why"?

How exactly would firing from the bottom cylinder do anything more to lessen recoil. The weight of the gun remains the same no matter if the forces of recoil are pushing or pulling that weight upward.

its all about leverage.  the higher the bore axis, the more force will be applied.

think of it as using a cheater bar.

if you can apply 50 lbs of force at 1', you have 50 ftlbs.  if you add a 2' cheater bar, your now aplly 150 ftlbs

Ugly dont mean squat, if it works. Give me an ugly gun if it runs and has ammo thats available. If it does the deed. 8)
