Kids Banned From Biking Or Walking To School!!
« on: October 01, 2009, 07:26:27 PM »
All reports I see regard today's youth as lazy, obese, don't get out enough, not enough exercise,...

Well, leave it to the State Run Education "of children", to do this...

http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=847190

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Seventh-grader Adam Marino is getting a firsthand lesson in civil disobedience.

The 12-year-old and his mother, Janette Kaddo Marino, are defying Saratoga Springs school policy by biking to Maple Avenue Middle School on Route 9. The Jackson Street residents pedal more than four miles together each way to the middle school on nice days despite being told not to by school officials and police.

"I guess you can say that we continue to do what we feel is our right," Kaddo Marino said recently. "We feel strongly we have a right to get to school by a mode of transportation we deem appropriate."

Their methods may be unconventional, but the Marinos are part of a growing number of Americans challenging the sedentary habits of today's youths and what they view as overanxious "helicopter" parenting. As fewer children walk and bike to school nationwide, parents have started groups like the "Walking School Bus," which promotes physical activity and fitness in youth by having them walk to school with adults.

While the school district does not allow elementary school or Maple Avenue students to ride bikes to school,
that could change in the coming weeks, Superintendent Janice White said. The Board of Education could vote to amend the policy on Oct. 13, when it is scheduled to discuss a recommendation from a district-formed committee.

"Supervised, parent/guardian bike riding may be permitted at specific sites in the future," White said in an interview Friday. The school has no legal responsibility over what occurs on Route 9, she added.

The biking debate started last spring, when school district officials told Kaddo Marino that Adam was violating school rules by biking to class. Walking to the school also is not permitted.

More at article,.... So to combat the global warming crowd, walking and biking is now bad... ???  When the hell did this happen?

Just like the folks that protested the solar farm, IN THE DESERT!!!???? Where's the logic?

I'm just stunned at the lack of intelligence from our kids EDUCATORS!!!!

Spineless, moronic school boards need to be way up the list for the Mussolini treatment at some point. Way up the list.  >:(

Withou knowing the facts here, I will offer this. Schools have gotten a lot of heat, and some suits from parents because ridiculously early start times, 7:30 here. The problem is that it is still semi-dark in the winter, and rush hour. They are probably trying to cya here. Its the only thing I can think of that might make sense. That said, I biked from 3rd grade till highschool when I got bussed across town.

Here in Coral Springs, the main H.S. and Middle School have LOTS of kids walking, biking, even skateboarding..... I did. Many of our parents did... Even without helmets, or ordinances requiring such. C'mon, this is BS.

This is a crock, and more evidence of a Nanny State.

After all, it's for the children....

I remember from way back in the old days when I was in school - You remember those days when we walked and biked up hill ten miles both ways in snow up to our backsides, that because of court cases schools were responsible for the safety of kids from the time they left their home in the morning until they crossed the home threshold in the afternoon.  It was these rulings that caused all of my student handbooks to include rules that we were to go straight from home to school and back home.  If we had after school jobs we were to go home before going to work.

It is that type of legal issue from way back in the 70's that cause schools to continue this way.  In my opinion this is another case for "wrap us all in bubble wrap, and protect me from myself" societal pansyism.

I don't know how it works there, but in CA, the schools must insure the children get home safely, not only that, but if the kids do anything, the school is liable.

Once more I hate admitting things, but besides Minnesota,  S. California is where I actually spent most of my school years.
