Mossberg Ghost Ring - Casualty of the "panic" buying

I've been keeping my eye out (and saying my pennies) to add a ghost ring sight to my Mossberg 500.    I notice for most of this year that the major dealers have been back-ordered.   Well, i have the money, burning a hole in my pocket, so where are this sights?

Enough's enough.  I called Mossberg today and was told they've got a run hitting the distributors in just a few weeks.   "Whew" was my reply," 'cause I was worried that you might stop making them altogether."  "No," was the CSR reply.  We've just had a run on them like everything else since the election.     

Huh, who would have thought.   Oh well, have my order in.

No kidding. I was looking at putting one on my maverick. When you could find them they were pushing $90 for what should be a $50 sight. To rich for my blood. Makes me regret selling my 590 many years ago.

Yep it is. Its their security model, 20" barrel and eight round tube. I've only taken it out once, for obvious reasons, but it works great. Number 4 and 00 pattern nicely from 3 to 10 yards. I intend to put some slugs through it to evaluate it for close range hogs (thats why I was looking at the ghost ring). For $230 and change for a gun you will seldom shoot and hopefully never need, its the best deal going. If I didn't already have bird guns I would have bought the six round model with the 18"barrel and then gotten a 26" or 28" Mossberg barrel with choke tubes. Its ugly but it works. I just need to find some land where I can set up jugs and do some more practical drills.

Its been 15 years since  I had the mossy and just bought it for one fly in trip to AK. I owned for less than a month. It was so cheap then that I sold it so I could carry 40 pounds of frozen salmon back on the plane and not have to pay $125 for the extra baggage. I got $100 and figured $50 was a fair price for gun rental. In retropsect, a bad call. The mossy seemed more solid, and I loved the ghost ring. It was very accurate with slugs, about 3-4 inches at 20 yards, which was as far as I shot it since it was purely for bear defense, and no sane human wants to practice a lot with 3" slugs. 30 rounds was enough for me and I bought a recoil pad after the first box.
If I had the green, I'd buy the 590. If it was the 500, I'd probably go with the maverick if it was just for SD and occasional use. If you want to take up grouse or skeet, I'd buy the mossy. Again though, I have a few boxes of buckshot through mine, so no expertise.

PS I HUGELY prefer the Mossberg top mounted thumb saftey over the sticky trigger guard safety on the maverick. But I didn't prefer it enough to pay an extra $200 dollars. It is so awkward for a lefty though, that I just ignore it. The gun is stored loaded without a round in the chamber. If I rack one, I just keep my finger off the trigger till the shooting is done before engaging it.

I've seen them at the local Bass Pro too.

Realizing it's a shot gun we're talking about, but I dont think I'd care for a reciever mounted rear sight like some ghost rings are.  

I'm also very suspicous of reciever mounted shotgun scopes, and red dots.  I do notice the "better" slug guns use cantilever scope rails welded to the barrel.  I'd lean toward that if only because I completely strip my guns after every trip in the field.
