.17HMR Article --- wrong picture
« on: October 07, 2009, 05:04:19 PM »
There was this recent posting on American Rifleman about possible safety issues using the .17HMR in semi-autos.

http://americanrifleman.org/ArticlePage.aspx?cid=24&id=1927

HOWEVER, the picture appears to be a .17M2 not the HMR.    Anyone else see it that way or my eyes just need adjusting.

Here's the two rounds side by side

Will work for ammo

"Remington has issued a recall of its .17 HMR ammunition, as well as its Model 597 .17 HMR semi-auto rifle as there is no safe .17 HMR ammunition available for the rifle.

Remington is providing free shipping to return Model 597 .17 HMR semi-auto rifles to Remington along with coupons to replace the rifle with another Remington firearm. Consumers will receive a $200 coupon for synthetic stock Model 597 rifles, and a $250 coupon for laminate stock Model 597 rifles."

I'm pretty sure the rifles were more than 2 bills new!  RIP OFF!  The manufacture is the one saying its unsafe.  SHOULD = FULL REFUND!

Can you say HUGE class action law suit?  It's America, land of the politically correct and lawyer.  You know it's gonna happen.

The picture in the article is a .17HM2, not the HMR.  I suppose it doesn't matter though.  I really wish it would say more.  Why would the .17 be incompatible with a semi-auto while the .22WMR is?  From the wording it almost makes me wonder if they are somehow worried about the rate of fire of a semi versus the bolt actions..

Not necessarilly.  My Marlin 17V with 3-9 X 40 Leupold is a stone-cold tack driver.

Although my rifle is not mentioned, CZ ZKM 617 auto loader, when I 1st got it, it would not shoot 3 shots in a row, and the cases were ballooned on the case head, visibly. After reading the manual, the warranty shop happened to be in town, and one that I knew well. I called the owner and asked if he had seen this and his reply was YEAH,  We are the shop that is supposed to figure out what is wrong. You can send it now, and wait for 2-3 months, or just check back with me, and when we get it figured out, you can bring it in and get it back in a week, so that is what I did. After I got it back, it did work better, but not 100%, some ballooning still on the case heads, but the form that I got  back said, " do not return the rifle until 300 rounds have been shot through it " I have not shot 300 rounds yet. Also only use Hornady ammo.

I suspect the head ballooning is going on with other semi's. Not enough pressure on the case to complete the seal long enough to support it from the bolt. The CZ has a very heavy bolt. Similar to the 10/22 but twice the length and weight. It may be a improper balancing act, spring pressure and bolt weight, versus the pressure of the cartridge. My idea, if it were not covered under warranty, was to thread the spring guide rod, and install a nut to adjust the spring tension, and possibly try different spring rates, lighten the bolt, but thread the holes so if that was the wrong direction, I could put set screws back in, to bring the bolt weight back to original.

Thanks m25 as that sheds some light on it.  I do love my Marlin 17VS, and it is a tack driver as well.  I have seen my wife shoot crows at 100 while standing with it.
