A 77-year-old man lost his arm below the elbow on Thursday when he was attacked by an alligator while playing golf on Fripp Island in South Carolina, the Island Packet reported on its Web site.

The man, who was playing the 11th hole of the island's Ocean Creek Golf Course, leaned down to pick up his ball when a 10-foot long alligator grabbed his arm, said Kate Hines, general manager of the Fripp Island Property Owners Association, according to the report.

The alligator then dragged the man into a nearby pond and went into a series of "death rolls," a technique it uses to tear apart its food, Hines told the paper. That was when the man lost his arm.

The man's golf buddies were able to free him from the alligator's grasp and called 911, according to the report.

Tracks worker killed the alligator and performed a necropsy on it to remove the man's arm from the animal's digestive track, Hines told the paper.

The arm was stored in a cooler in the hopes of re-attaching it. The man's condition was still unknown late Thursday night.

I was on a business trip (yea, right!) with my boss down in the Englewood area south of Tampa some years back.  Mid July, hot as hell, playing a Ray Floyd course late in the day for FREE because it's so damn hot nobody wants to play.  Had to walk the course but what the heck, it was free..  my boss had never played in Florida before.

Anyway, we're walking down the fairway and Randy is walking along the edge of a pond, flipping golfballs out of the mud with one of his wedges, I tried to tell him to watch himself but he didn't listen and before he knew it, there was about a ten footer chasing him off the pond.  Funniest damn thing I'd seen on a golf course in a while. 

Hopes and prayers that this guy recovers from his injuries.  God Bless..

Thats the thing the yankees don't get Timothy. All those drainage canals come straight out of the glades and a water "hazard" is a great place for a gator to eat rats, ducks, fish and the occasional retiree. I never chased a ball into one and I never will.

I tried to tell him but like most kids, he didn't want to listen, he was intent on finding some range balls for the kids.

I'd spent a year in south FL during my Navy days so I knew better.  Also know enough to avoid the fire ants you guys cultivate to aggravate the northerners. ;)

MANY moons ago when I played FLOG, I used a 1 iron off the tee cause I could average 230 yards and KEEP IT IN PLAY!

My MAJOR short coming was under 150 yards.  I can come out of a green side sand trap with no problem (open the face and blast it) but I could not 'chip it up' from 100 and put it on the green!  150 yards was my 'short shot'.

I gave it up in grad school when I realized I'd rather spend my time and money fishing, shooting or drinking beer and dancing with girls.

Chubbs, :). I never take a gun on the greens but I do not live in the southern states where gators and snakes run rampant. I would if I lived or golfed down there though....
