Hog Wild in Ga

Well, it's 2:25 AM in south Georgia, coldest night this fall, in the 40's with a 12 mph wind.....and my son's FFA project sow decides to start giving birth.

Two popped out quick and now she's having difficulties.....so the FFA advisor is on the way over to see if they're hung up.

Oh well, that's my frivolous post of the day.

Back out to the cold I go.

Ahhhhhhh the memories.  Years of 100 sow operation (that translates to almost 300 farrowings a year when you factor in cull replacements), and they always surprise you when low pressure (translate cold front ... snow storms) come rolling through.  Many an all nighter elbow deep in the nether regions of 350# mamas  :-\

Hope all is well, and he has ten strong healthy little ones!  No matter the out come FFA projects are among the best education any youngen can get.

Good luck to him, and good for you for providing the opportunity!

Well, 12 hours later.....and she just spit out another one....which only makes 4 total.....been a long time since we had one that took this long between birthing's. It's her first litter so it may go on for a while..... I don't think she's done yet.

She had the first three over about 5 hours and we thought she was through. We went to town to get another heat lamp and some penicillin and stopped back in at the house to eat a sandwich. My son went on down to check on the generator and called and said she had another one while he was standing there.

We originally thought they were crossed up in the birth canal but I guess she's just slow. No problems, just very slow. Made for a long night and even longer day..................

I'll be ready for a nap soon.  8)

Hell Peg, be honest.........it's Saturday, you'd be ready for a nap by now anyway!!  ;D

Do you use oxytocin?  Beyond that all I can say is Damn Gilts!  Still a good experience for the two of you together.  In the future it will be one of those prized memories of being together in the good and bad  :)

Reminds me of the James Herriot books (All creatures Great and Small etc., If your boy hasn't read them you should buy him one, they describe the adventures of an English farm vet in the thirties and are funny as hell). He always wound up elbow deep in pig in the freezing rain at three a.m.. I remember a line from one one of them where he was debating swearing off bacon to prevent a reccurence or doubling his dailey consumption out of revenge. ;D  Me, I raised goats in FFA. Two kids, no worries and cute as buttons. Just sayin'. ;)
