TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS: Part TWO.
« on: October 23, 2009, 11:39:40 PM »
This is UNREAL:

So, you read the first thread with this title... (if not, go back)....

TODAY, I get an email from another close friend. He is an instructor for LFI, security consultant and has worked in Executive Protection. In fact, I was using him as a resource to help solve some alarm issues for the victims from the first thread!

Quote
  Tapped on shoulder.

   Turn.

   Can see Incoming fist.

   Cannot block or deflect it.

Direct smashing blow to the side of my head.

   Out cold on floor.

Kicked more than 8 times in head and torso.

   Out for 5 min.

4 guys grabbed this a*** and threw him in street.

   Cops arrive, he is gone.

No one can figure out who what why when of where.

   MRI, xrays, cops the works.

   Random.

I had scanned as always on entering, saw him and his sketchy buddy.

Motive unknown.

Totally random.  No idea who he "is" nor why he assaulted me.

I interviewed the [local bar] bar tender, he had kicked hum out for being too drunk.  So naturally he went to the [2nd local bar].

I have 16 bruises and injuries, none too too bad.

F'ing nut case, totally blind sided me, saw a hand coming up and 5 min later was in a pool of blood.

So... if you know me and have trained with me, especially if you're one of the top guys I know in your field.. LOOK OUT. These things come in threes, right?

Seriously, I now officially don't care who you are... be more alert and trust your instincts.  AGAIN, this guy mentions having noticed the guy (who has been arrested for Felony Assault, already) before the attack.

They DID find and arrest him ?
And your buddies injuries are relatively minor ?  Glad to hear that.

As for the rest of us

"He is an instructor for LFI, security consultant and has worked in Executive Protection"

It happened to HIM, it can sure as HELL happen to you.
Think about THAT.

Thanks for another valuable life lesson, Rob....sad that it came at the expense of one of the 'good guys'.

This is one of those situations, like being struck by lightning, where all the preparedness in the world still can not prepare us 100% for every situation. That is not to say to 'give up' in our training because we might not win 'em all......quite the opposite is true. We must give even greater due diligence to our training, in spite of the fact that we might not win 'em all.

Glad the injuries were survivable for your friend, and that he will be OK.

Wild Bill Hickock was right to sit with his back to the wall in bars.

Rob, glad your friend is OK, rough lesson.

Sounds like the guy was not detained and got away based on the rather terse email.

Rob had a good point - the BG was noted on entry, but apparently (?) dismissed as a threat.

One of the important lessons in both of these situations is something that I have touched on in other threads in the past.  "readiness" is largely an illusion.
As Pegleg noted, anyone can be ambushed. Regardless of what "color code" you think you are in, you can be caught off guard. One of the most important things you can do is train to the standard of worst case scenarios. Surprised. Off Balance.  Don't expect to be in control or on the offensive when you might have to use your skills or tools.

The guy fled the initial attack, but was identified by witnesses and arrested later.

There is something amiss in the universe.

Rob, you said it happens in 3's? It well might have run it's course already with what happened to FQ in Charleston.

2 capable guys have bad things happen to them and FQ is the one guy who gets off clean.

Not saying that FQ is not capable, but...............    ;)

Who says God does not have a sense of humor?

Glad your friend is OK.

You can train to be as aware as you can be but some times you have to roll with the punch (no pun intended).

Glad your friend will heal from his attack.

I will add this, having spent the better part of ten years behind or managing a bar.  They can be extremely unpredictable because not only do you have strangers mingling, you have strangers consuming alcohol, sometimes at an alarming rate.

I've had people try and blindside me, stab me and generally try and f**k me up in bars!  None suceeded but, I will not enter into another probably for the rest of my life.  I don't drink anymore, granted but, even bystanders uninvolved in the fracus tend to get injured.  Testosterone and alcohol have always been a dangerous mix, add stupidity and it can become deadly.
