I swear by mine 1 big hole on the 1st mag and 3 more mags into that hole at 25 yards out of the box. 1500 rounds zero problems. All I have done is yellow nail polish on the front sight, Hogue grips and recently an extended thumb safety.

My Rock Island is an awesome gun. I don't have laser grips on it yet though.

I'd take a long, hard look at it.  I really like Ruger's SA and DA revolvers and my Mark II, but I'm not too fond of their other semi-auto pistols.

I read this thread with interest. But does anyone KNOW FOR SURE that Ruger is going to do a 1911?

For the record, although I have not bought one, I think the Ruger 345 is a fine pistol. I see Mas Ayoob packs one often on TV.

Tom, I think that many NH police agencies pack them as well. Is that right? Our guys here in Michigan seem to carry SIGs or Glocks. But I think I read that Detroit is switching to S&W M&P.

From a post I made long ago and won a Ruger shirt for, I think Ruger is a fine company that really stands behind their products. I have a few Rugers, rifles and shotguns, and think they are great. The Ruger No. 1 in 7x57 is my favorite deer rifle. It is perfect for how I hunt.

I do not have any Ruger pistols or revolvers, but I do have pistols from that other New Hampshire company - SIG SAUER.   BTW don't try to tell me that SIG is a German Company, I have been to the SIG factory in Epping, NH and watched them make pistols in the USA. I have a German P6 which is the only one I have that was not made here.

Bill, as far as I know, most NH police agencies use either Glock or Sig.

If they do come out with one I'll have one more gun to add to the WANT list. The Rugers Ive owned all have been TANK SOLID.

It wouldn't suprise me if Ruger already cast 1911 frames for other companies at their casting facility.  I have heard that their P89 series of pistols, while not pretty are reliable and built like a tank.

That would describe every Ruger ever built (with the possible exception of the LCP). The thing is, I have no doubt that Ruger could build a good 1911. That's a given. The thing is,do we need another one? Will they beat Taurus or Rock Island (corrected courtesy of Blackwolfe) on price and reliability for the dollar? Will they beat Para or Kimber on accuracy and aesthetics? Survey says no. Why not do something new? Ammo, machining, components, and CAD tech have all advanced significantly sice JMB put the first 1911 toghther by candle light. Can we please, maybe, come up with something new? I mean honestly, we are not talking about a mom and pop shop here. Use your resources to innovate, not imitate.

Quaker, I think you mean Rock Island.  Rock River is not building 1911s at this time and their's were pricey, and I assume very good.

Why not a 1911?  There is a big demand for 1911 pistols, why not get a little of that market for low R&D cost?  Many would buy one because it says Ruger on it.  About a year before the SR556 was public knowledge I wondered if they were working on an AR style rifle.  I recieved a catalog from them that had some Ruger branded AR accesories in it.  Haven't seen anything like that for a 1911 though.

Yep, people will buy it.... Yes, there are a bunch of different 1911s out there, but the demand side of the equation still has not been fully met. Hell, just the number of 1911 officianatos out there that would buy one just to add it to their collection would make it worth getting into the market..... Not because it says Ruger on it, but because it says 1911 on it ;)

First, thanks for the correction. I did mean Rock Island, and if I were to buy a 1911 tomorrow, that would be my choice. I like the price and I like old school design, and the reviews are great. Likewise I have no doubt Ruger can make a buck selling a mid-grade 1911. That's what they do, and they do it well. Still, how nice would it be if they took the concept of interchageable uppers from ARs and applied it to pistols? A 9mm, .357 Sig, .22, 10mm, .40, just interchange them. Its like their AR, its nice, but there are a lot of GPUs, like Addax, that I would look at as well. If they had produced a mini-14 that took AR mags or a mini-30 that took AKs, I would own one. I would not complain if someone gave me a Ruger 1911, but if I were to go shopping for one, it wouldn't be the first one I looked at either.
