Looking for a new pistol
« on: November 28, 2007, 04:58:54 PM »
OK here is the deal I am looking for a new 22 pistol. I am looking for a 1911 style 22. I have thought about the following
Buying a 22 conversion kit
Buying a Kimber 22
I spoke to the people who own the local indoor range and they have a Kimber 22 on the rental program they said it is shot out with about 2K rounds run thourgh it.

Are there any other options I have not considered. I have several other Ruger 22's (Mark III and a 22-45 with a can)

Also if you were to get a conversion kit what kit would you get. I have a few issues with the kits.
I have 2 Wilson's and the extractor will not work on some of the kits. (one in 45 the other one in 9mm-38 super)
I have and STI  2011 in 40 Cal that is a wide body. I do have a Union Switch and Signal that I could make a 22 out of.

So what sould I do?

Since you want a 1911 style, I would go for the kit. I had a Ciener and it worked well, only sold it because I bought a Marvel conversion. Cieners are 200 - 250 bucks, mags are 20-30 bucks depending on where you buy. The Marvel starts at 350.00 and go's up, but mine came with a test target of .6" @ 50 yards. If you want a good plinker go with a Ciener, Kimber etc... If you want a tack driver, go for the Marvel.

Side note: If you have problems with a Ciener, He can be an ass.

Marvel makes a good unit and very accurate but not a complete gun...Kimber makes a complete .22 and a choice (I believe) of 2 conversions for the 1911.  One is supposed to be more accurate than the other.  Check out their web site and see.  Also check out this weeks Shooting Gallery...Michael was showing some neat .22's.  Now if I could just hit the lottery!

I have looked at the Marvel what model did you get? Wilson sells the Marvel under their name. I have heard that Ciener could be an ass as well

Thanks

I called them about 2 weeks ago. The first order was just getting ready to be shipped. They would be out until after the first of the year. They were also about 100.00 more expensive than the Marvel unit. Do you think they are worth the delta in price?

I got mine several years ago but in checking with the Marvel web site mine is quite similar the the Tactical Conversion.  I have used it for plinking and side matches at an IDPA club I shoot at.  Mine was a little larger dimensionally that a normal top end so if you want a holster carry you might need to get a holster with a little extra room in it (also check with Marvel to see if dimentions have changed).  Good luck and have fun whichever you choose.

Michael, are you saying TS is going to put out a 1911 .22 conversion unit?

Put a KIMBER conversion on a REMINGTION RAND worked well. Not many rounds yet though .
Had to relieve the notch on the thumb safety with a small file. No hi cap mag's 10 only. Was having trouble with the rand's fireing pin . Got that fixed and went back to 45.

While finally reached a decision.  Here's what I'm going to do. I purchased a Wilson 22 caliber upper, and I'm having a stainless steel super grade lower built to put it on.  Since the upper is dark, and the lower his stainless.  It will be a classic super grade, but in 22.  It's going to take about six weeks to get the gun built and delivered.  This should be the ultimate 1911 in 22 LR. I'm just wondering, can I shoot this in the Ruger rimfire challenge in Tulsa this year?
