I'm a huge fan of Band of Brothers and all WWII stuff, and of the military in general. I never served (when my draft # came up we were getting shipped right off to Nam. Nixon killed the draft right before I was called). My point is, I respect the military but never served. I play video games like CoD and MoH. In some ways they let me experience a little more about how things were for our troops, or the circumstances of history, etc., just like a helicopter simulator helps you understand the kinds of problems inherent in flying one. AND I like to shoot the bad guys. When a game comes along and gives you a choice of what side to be on, I never liked the bad guy side and never took it. That's just me.

A friend had Grand Theft Auto- I tried it and didn't like it because it's random violence- there's no cause, no valor implied. In a game like CoD you are pursuing something on the side of right.

Some of you may now be saying, " 'Side of Right?' It's just a video game" And THATS THE POINT. It's just a freaking video game. When I see Fox news beating up on this stuff I'm reminded that they have a bad side- find me some real news.

It's just a video game. Granted, the timing with Ft Hood just happening is horrible, but I don't think they had any way to consider that horrible event right at their release date.

I don't have the equipment for this new game (I'm always a system behind- got a regular XBox). I understand that this controversy is part of the game to help infiltrate the bad guys. So you go through a really DISTASTEFUL part of the game- and that is part of the experience. I'm sure it heightens your desire to GET these guys in the end.

At any rate, it's a video game. It's like when I see a hunting show and a guy bags a whitetail, rushes up to it, and starts swinging the head all around, high fiving, etc, with no respect for the creature who's life he just ended. That's distasteful and makes me believe the guy is a douchebag, but it doesn't make me believe that hunting or hunting shows should be banned or that I should run right out, shoot an animal, and then act like I'm some guy named Flozell who just scored an NFL touchdown.

A little perspective is needed...it's a video game. I have "played" war games my entire life and haven't killed anyone yet and don't intend to, unless they are poised to hurt me, someone I love, or an innocent.

A little perspective...

jaybet, great post!  ;D

As for Modern Warfare 2 the game has been in development for 2 years and the November 10th date was announced six months ago so postponing the game would have caused a few big logistical problems considering the demand for the game and the amount of space it takes up in smaller stores because of that demand. Having played a few of the COD series including the first modern warfare I'll say this, It's meant to be in-your-face about just how bad terrorists are and (while over the top in terms of action) just how bad ass the military is, both American and British. In the first modern warfare there are quite a few shock moments like this and they do make you really hate the bad guys (a Middle Eastern terrorist leader and a Russian ultranationalist). Its really a grown-up's GI Joe co-staring the SAS.

BTW, I've heard you can get through the terrorist level without killing anyone, I hope thats true, I don't have the game yet but I'm going to when its on sale.

Though I loved the thing, I gave up on Xbox 360 for good when my third one developed "ring of death"...  I strictly use the PS3 now for blue ray movies and games.

Best Xbox 360 game EVER?!?!  Battlefield II

Fun sniper action, drive HumVee's, tanks, chopper gun ships, dune buggy's, fight with land mines, claymores, grenades, RPG's,  shotguns, M60's, pistols, .50 cal., near anything you want.  And the game is older, so it sells for about $15 bucks!!!   :)

You have to play on-line though.  The single player game bites.  :(

Best of all, is that it's ALL about stratagy and team work!!!!  Though if your team stinks, you can Rambo things too.  ;)

And no one would whisper a word of discontent if this was a book, television, or movie.

There it is in a nut shell..... This was kinda disturbing for me to watch, but aside from this scene it really looks like an awesome video game.

*Go listen to this weeks podcast (Bane talks about approaching a situation with an active shooter) and then re-watch the vid..... Bane is right, your eye is really drawn to anyone who is not running in fear and they really portray themselves as a target.

I wish people fact checked their posts for their blogs. THIS IS NOT COD 4. This is Modern Warfare 2. Just annoying to mislabel a blog. I am not referring to this thread but to the blog site with the video.

People will say violent video games... will cause violent children, so ban them right?

The Call of Duty series of games personify the men and women in the armed services as heroes.  And its my firm belief that every soldier, sailor, airmen and marine deserve our deepest respect.

My heart goes out to the departed and their families of this horrible event.

As the father of a child with ...... "issues", I can absolutely confirm that when we used to let him play games like MoH, CoD and other first person shooters, he was a LOT more problematic and violent. At least for a short time period after playing. Now, not all or even most of his problems are because of a video game, no matter how violent. But it DOES have an effect, a cumulative effect if he is allowed to continue playing. Obviously we no longer let him play those games and we work our buts off everyday trying to help him (and his siblings) to learn how to exist and excel in everyday life. This is a boy who is literally capable of being a rocket scientist as he learns and grows. Not some "no account", broken home, ignored by his drug using parents lost in the system kiddo, but a child who some have said is getting the best help available to a kid. And this is by people who have the opportunity to see the worst in homes with their jobs, unfortunately.

Am I advocating the banning or censorship of anything, HELL NO! That is my job as a parent to protect my children from things that are not in their best interest. I used to believe that video games were just that, games. I never believed that they would affect behavior. Now I have proof that they do, at least in the case of my son.

Glad to here it is NOT COD4.  That seemed to be about real war and real situations from the commercials I've seen.

I guess I should also say that I own and have played almost all of those games and enjoyed them, a lot. Just won't let my kids play them until they get much older and wiser in the ways of the world and their own feelings and emotions.
