hi guys,

just received a email from my nephew who said that his mom is making him get a hobby other than xbox and archery. he said he would like to start gun smithing, nothing serious, just making a new stock and polishing and stuff like that, they probably not be shot.

he asked if i had any old relics that he could use to start him off, but me being a man of small pleasures, only have my AR, rem. 700. sig and 1911. i was wondering if there were any sites or stores that would sell used rifles that a 15 year old could afford. (not necessarily in working order)

He also asked about the legal issues of owning a gun, he being in NJ. it will most likely sit on his wall but there are many sites that only  ship to dealers that check for licenses.

I have a SOG magazine that has old Yugo Mausers for $70 that have 'cracked stocks and/or missing small parts, no bolt" for $70  They also have Russian M44 carbines in same shape for same price.  BUT I am sure if he went around to some shops in his area he could probably find a couple old non shooters for next to nothing price.

He could also buy a black powder kit gun pretty cheap.

First off, He REALLY needs to check into the state laws, NJ is nearly as bad as Ca and NY and in some ways worse.
After that I would suggest www.sarcoinc.com they are in Stirling NJ so he can go in person to find the parts and tools he needs.
One of his Parents will have to make the actual purchase of the gun but he should be OK for everything else.

Starting at 15, by 21, he could be the next Les Baer, or Ed Brown.

Go to a gun show or three, and find something to restore, strip down, and do a frame up restoration on.

Replacing a stock on an old Mauser sounds like a great place to start, Moisin Nagant as well, small steps could lead to a big future.

and yes, he may have to get the hell out of NJ, unless the new Gov. can be a little more sane regarding gun laws and the State Legislature.

I was typing while Haz was posting and only just read his post. Black powder is an OUTSTANDING idea since the guns aren't regulated, he can get the kits by mail and it gives him a chance to learn the full range of wood and metal working in as much or as little detail as he wants

Even NJ may have rules against BP, but is a good idea, go to gunshops and ask for broken or damaged stocks to use, hopefully free, and maybe a job lead, apprentice type deal.
