I am very interested to hear the entire run down on their Customer Service.... I have not heard much on the topic.
Everything I needed to learn in life I learned from Country Music.

I called S&W to ask about sending my M&P 40 for servicing. THe slide release is incredibly difficult to operate because it sits so close to the frame. So much so I can not operate the release left handed using the ambi slide stop release. The Customer Service person sent me a label explaining that they would update the gun to the standards of the current release. Does anybody know exactly what to expect will be done. He was not able to detail the changes that will be made. If any of you have had this experience previously I would love to get some insight. Especially on turnaround time from S&W since this is my primary carry and home defense gun. Without it I will be relying on my AR for home service and carrying only my surefire and a pocket knife till it's return.

YES, I can help you. The M&P40 slide stop will be replaced along with the pins holding the trigger system in place. You will be sending the gun up to Springfield, MA 01140(i think) 2100 Roosevelt Ave. Attn. Repair Dept. along with a short letter which you should sign and date and keep a copy and they will set you straight around 3 weeks, most likely only charging you shipping one way if you are impatient like myself and have the,"want it done now" attitude. Or you can wait for the "call tag" and pay nothing for your adventure.
If you have anymore questions regarding your repair let me know, I have a lot of experience with S&W and if I could have normal round count in magazines instead of the 10rds. it would take the Glock out of my holster. S&W is an awesome company to deal with as far a customer satisfaction. Unlike Glock, I used the heck out of my G19 and wore out the grips mag well until it was so thin that I lost a half of a dime worth of frame. Glock took almost a full year to find a "MA compliant G19" I was only happy to get it back until I shot the POS that Glock sent me. The G19 can not make it though a full magazine without 3 jams and my point of impact at 7yds. was not good with my rear sight pushed almost a 1/16" off center. A quick adjustment to center of the slide fixed impact placement but should not of been necessary in the first place along with the jam-o-matic break in that is very slowly getting  better (1 per mag now). I have wasted a lot of premium priced ammo trying to fix the reliability of this system. Not a issue with Smith and Wesson now that they are American owned.

Just my very long 2cents.  ;)

Detailed pics can be hard for me.

Your pics seem to indicate a larger  "U" shaped slide stop release, while mine is more "square". May not be anything at all as pics are hard to interpret. The spring looks more compressed as well.

I also may not be seeing any wear on the actual "stop/catch" which could indicate it seats too high, and would make a left handed release tougher. Hard to say.

Since your having an issue, send it back, S&W will make it right, if it were me, I'd have a reputable gunsmith take 5 minutes, and give me his .02 cents. Most smiths won't even charge to look at something. But I don't think, from what I've seen in the latest release, the slide stop is any larger, or more pronounced from the frame.

S&W sent me a label and stated there would be no charge to bring it up to current factory specs. It's an obvious difference between your newer release and the original.

I sent my PPK/S to S&W on 11-3 with their FedEx prepaid label for recall repair.  FedEx delivered it back to my home on 11-11, and they polished the ramp and throat so it might go into battery more reliably.  AND the new manual safety lever has smooth rounded edges instead of the razor sharp edges on the original !!
Shoot something every day, no excuses !

I would expect no more than a two week turnaround,, as it's going to the MA facility. If it comes back dirty, it is what it is as they test fire any and all service. Which I believe is a good thing. If it's not right at the factory that's the right place to correct any issue.

Please post a follow up. I'm sure it will come back solid.

I sent my M&P in around the 15th of July got it back on the 17th of Aug. My slide release is like twyacht's square and flat on top and the SN starts with MPL. I think I recall the box saying it was manufactured in late 06. But I didn't buy it till this year. All in all my experience was pretty good.

So it's finally off to see the wizards at S&W... Thankfully I have friends who look out for me. One of which who is a retired OSP loaned me for a week his P226 in .40s&w... and since that's the only caliber I currently have it's perfect. Nice gun especially in DAO and Stainless slide.
