I would suggest getting rid of 5.56 and going with the 6.8 or going 7.62x39 with a rifled system that works. Get rid of gas operated and go with the piston idea. Why carry a weapon that does not agree with your enemy??? They carry 7.62x39. Great round, just expand on it. Additionally you would be able to use the ammo of your enemy to defeat him/her!!!!!!!!!

Easiest fix....upgrade the bullet to something like the old 5.45x39 "poison bullet" that served the Soviets so well. Better terminal performance w/o loss in ranged accuracy.

If the military upgrades to anything, it'll be the SCAR. Politics & contracts and all.....
Why, yes....I'm the right-wing extremist Obama warned you about... ;D

I just wish Texas was as free and independent as everyone thinks it is...   :'(

If the military up grades you are far more likely to get the electronic BS than a more reliable action or larger round.
The idea of using a Com/bloc round like the 7.62X39 or 5.45 X 39 will not happen.
Since all that will be allowed is FMJ going to an even smaller round will only compound the problem.
Given the number of women, and smaller statured men in the Service nowadays  7.62 X 51 may be a bit much for them, look for some compromise such as the 6.5 or 6.8.
Interesting note, The Marines and Navy have been interested in the 6mm range since the late 1800's

Even the Garand was originally designed as a sub .30 cal.

It seems to me that all of the M4s problems come from the 14.5" barrel. Less power, less reliability, etc. M16s work a lot better. The guys who need a more compact weapon would be better served by sub-machineguns.

The M16 has been undergoing some kind of "fix" ever since Nam.  When will it finally be seen it sucks?  Dump it and find something that works. Even the AK was head and shoulders above the M16.

If the .223 is not working, use what does, 7.62x39 is a man killer. Use it.

For what we will waste on R&D over the five or more years to find another platfrom we could buy AK's and save money.

We have some of the great minds of the 15th century running things.
