Title: Ever regret buying a gun and why?
Post by: MAUSERMAN on December 17, 2009, 11:15:14 PM
This goes out to anyone thats bought a gun that turned out to be a POS?
In my case it was a TEC9 model ab10 that never fed realiably and could hit the target if you threw at it.

There are two I regret.  I had a Cobra Derringer.  It was a piece of junk should have just got a Bond
The other one was a .40 short and weak Glock.  It never felt right, never could hit anything.  The ONLY thing it had going for  it was the full mag during the dark days of the clinton AWB.

My "new rule" is to never sell a gun that has superior accuracy no matter what it is. There are a few guns I wish I still had if I'd followed that rule. I've never really had a pos but many just did not work out as I liked. The only gun I ever picked up that should have been a pos was that small AMT .45. It was good to me but it gave the friend I sold it to nothing but headaches.

Heck I had 3 at one time. (v.e.r.y slow learner)   Couldn't keep them on the target backer, much less anywhere near the black.

Damn, they did go bang every time though, and looked cool as well. A mini-garand. I don't know how Ruger screwed that one up, but I sold mine as well.

Thought I needed a High Standard something or other in .22 short.  Thought it was going to be very accurate and light shooting for target/plinking.  Never could get it to feed reliably and wasn't that accurate...sold it and took the hit!

I have issues with tupperware.  I have had five over the years.  Two were traded for others, one works well, but the other two just don't seem to get along with me.  However, I haven't found anyone that will give me enough in trade to make a deal, and I also am stubborn enough that "I'm going to make these things work for me!"

Rule #1 - Never sell a gun without replacing it

Rule #2 - Never give up on a gun until you know why you are giving up on it

Rule #3 - Making empty brass is a good thing, and if you can't get over the frustrations by making empty brass, you are in the wrong game  ;)

I'm a member of the Tec9 club.  Seemed like a good purchase during the ban.  But it never was reliable.

Worst gun I ever bought was a mini-14.  From a bench at 50 yards it wouldn't put two consecutive shots within a foot of each other.  I thought I'd gone blind or developed a "bang" phobia and had Haz give it a try with exactly the same outcome.  I used it to offset the cost of an AR and have never regretted it.  But, contrary to others on this site, I love my little Glock 27.  Accurate as heck.  Never jams.  Easy takedown and cleaning.  Mags are available everywhere.  Fits my dainty little paw like it was custom crafted.  Makes a reasonable hole in stuff when it goes bang. :)

Bought a shiny spankin' new SR9.  The rest is history. I just sold a Taurus 745 but I don't regret buying it. I made a lot of empty brass with it and found that it was not reliable enough for my purposes, so I parted with it. I tried something and gave it a big try, and it didn't work out, so I don't regret it. Plus, in the process I emptied out a thousand rounds of 45 brass so it's ALL GOOD!

Never regretted any of the guns that I have ever purchased. BUT I went with cheap glass on top of a couple of VERY nice rifles. Learned a lesson about quality optics. Fortunately it only cost a few hundred dollars to learn.

back in the early 90's I brought a ruger P89 9mm, couldn't hit squat, slide had wiggled to where you would think it would fall off.
Sold it and went back to S&W 66.

Thompson Center Encore. I thought it would be cool to have one "chassis" with interchangable barrels. Not. The rifle is too light for heavier loads, and customization is too expensive and convoluted to fix the problems the base model has. I have killed a few animals with it but mostly it rides in the safe while my Marlin .30-30 does the work. I'd like to sell it, but I have no takers in two years of trying. I'd like to replace it with bolt action .30-06 or .270.

Aren't the Encore and the Pro Hunter the same gun?  I've heard either you love them or hate them, a lot of the TV pro's use the T/C and the public has followed.

Bolt guns are hard to beat but the lever is a close second. ;D

Phoenix Arms .22LR pistol with 2 barrels (one short and another at 5+ inches) with a slew of magazines. Didn't pay much and will sell it as soon as I find the short barrel.

This POS is actually a 2-fer. I bought one, could not get the barrel release to work. Took it back to the store and the gunsmith couldn't get it to work either. So off to the factory, which replaced the whole thing - new s/n so new ATF form plus transfer fee on a gun I already did all that to.

Found out after I bought it that Phoenix are considered "Saturday night specials" - cheap POS'. Live and learn - this is how I learned to research a damn gun before shelling out any money.

Beretta 90-Two. It felt great, shot great, but there was not enough holster options, didn't like the plastic grip. Traded it in on a Sig P250.

Should have just bought the 92. I am going to buy a stainless steel 92 when I get my IRS refund.

When you put it that way you are 100% right. It ended up costing me a good bit more but again, you are right. There are NO regrets with the outcome. In fact, I take back the whole SR9 reference because somehow it morphed into a great pistol and a great new friend. Best bad purchase I ever made!
Man I wish I could screw up like that a few more times.

Yes the "Pro Hunter is nothing but an Encore with a camo stock.
I don't know what TFR is referring to when he says fixing the "problems" is to convoluted. It's about the simplest design I've ever seen, and with the Life time warranty if there is some thing wrong you just send it back. As for to light for heavier loads J.D. Jurris was chambering the Contender for Elephant loads, that's the whole point of that reinforcing around the breech of the Encore and G2 Contender.
Sounds more like he didn't like the recoil of the heavier loads and made a poor choice for his purposes.
I have to add to my earlier post. I remember one gun that I felt was a waste of money, a Century G3, sights were so out of whack that I could not adjust them onto the paper at 100 yards. I traded that one.

I dont like my Benelli Nova.... Its a great shooter, but it doesnt fit me well.... the length of pull is too long and the slide is a little too far forward for my tastes. If I can unload it at a respectable price it is gone, baby gone.

Can't you just get a shorter stock, or trim the one you have ? Seems like that should put the slide into a better position as well since you would be shortening the OAL.

Yep, that's exactly right shooter and Tom. I thought the Thompson was a cool idea, mostly since all the TV hunters were having such a good time with them and I bought into the versatility of the system. I bought the basic Encore with a .30-06 barrel, then added a 12 ga Turkey barrel. The -06 barrel is 24" and I bought the synthetic stock. Poor choice. Too light of a combination and the recoil was pretty harsh. After a few shots one of the forearm posts broke. There was a lot of side to side movement in the lock which I fixed with an after market part, and when I started researching improvements to accurize it I gave it up...It just didn't work for me like I envisioned it would. I decided to keep it as my Turkey shotgun since it fills that role very well...but I can't sell the -06 and .270 barrels to anyone. No one's buying them. I'd love to buy a Ruger M77 in .270 or .30-06, which is what I sold to buy this gun. Right now the rifle has a .270 barrel and wood forearm. That seems to work well and I've shot a few deer and pigs with it. I also thought I'd like the single shot aspect of it. But I don't. Out here hunting deer and pigs in the Calfiornia coastal range there is definately a need to have a second quick shot. There has been more than once when I wished I have wished I had the second shot at the turn of the bolt instead of having to break open the action, pick out the spent case, and go through the loading, closing, cocking the hammer routine.
If anyone wants to buy the rifle barrels let me know. I'll make you a deal...

My sympathies. I have made some dumb trades myself. I have to say though that you are 100 percent correct on that Ruger M77 .270. Maybe I just got lucky with mine, but not only is it the prettiest rifle I own, (I like the lines) it is the most accurate I've ever shot. I would sooner give you my truck than that rifle. I'd sell the whole TC, buy a New England Arms break barrel for turkey (figure about $75 used, I mean hell, you're shooting something the size of a foot stool at 30 yards, how much gun do you need?) and get a new Ruger, you'll be a much happier camper.

TFR, that second shot is why I never bought one even though employees got a 40% discount.
If I hit the Lottery I would have an Encore and an old style Contender, Wood stock, Blued, engraved and gold inlaid and I would never shoot them  ;D

1986 saved up the then 450 bucks to buy a steyer AUG, and just before I went to the gunshop, a friend offered up a Browning Citori that he had tricked up for skeet shooting, back bored barrel, recoil reducer etc... for the same money, I had always wanted one. I could not hit S**T with it, a few weeks later the assault weapon ban went into place and the AUG skyrocketed.

H&R 999 breaktop revolver .22 rf, 9 shots always wanted one, got a 4" model new, 4" groups at 10'.

Hard to believe, M25 Whitefeather, Carlos Hathcock model M1A, at 1st it was great, with my first reloads 3" at 300 yards, then next session, 3" at 100 yards, found the scope had physically broken inside, got the scope repaired and had a mildot reticle installed at the same time. Back to the range, no change, shot 10 different kinds of ammo, and had other guys shoot it, 2.5 to 3", my standard grade shoots 1 to 1 1/2" with iron sights. sent it back to springfield they said they rebedded the trigger group, but I had it sold before it came back, never shot it again. Replaced it with an M40 marine corp sniper rifle.

I own 2 old contenders, bought circa 1979, love them, I sold all my barrels after buying an ultralite arms bolt action pistol and now only have the .22rf barrels one pistol and one carbine, plus a 16" .223 carbine barrel, they all shot well if not excellent.

I have bought several guns that I thought might fit a need but wound up selling them.

Here's one that comes to mind:
I bought a S&W 325 and traded my snubby too to get it. I knew after I walked out of the store it was a bad move. I did not keep the revolver 30 days before I traded it for a S&W 649 (an upgrade over my previous 442) and the world was right again. Another pistol I regret selling is my CZ P-01. That pistol really fit my hand well. One day I'm going to buy another one or its larger version.

Right now I have someone who wants my Springfield MC Operator and I'm not letting it go. There is something about the pistol that I just like.....

I think part of this is becoming aware of what one likes. Sometimes one doesn't know until they go through the experience.

If it was one of the old ones...yup, find a soft spot and kick it.  If it is one of the newer models then maybe not.  I had a Model 70 Coyote in 22-250...could not get the thing to shoot better than 1 foot groups at 100 yards...took a beating on that one.  Wish I had never bought it.

And then I have bought another SR9 this past Friday...waiting on the connector sales (soon they say) from Ghost to move it to 5.5 lbs....I had the IWB from 5 Shot Leather...I had to fill it up.   8)

The worst POS I ever had was a Taurus PT22. The trigger was awful, shot half a box of ammo through it and the slide actually fell off
the front of the gun and started bouncing down the lane at the range. (This was first and last time at the range with that gun.)
I know it is a copy of Berettas design, but I sure hope the Beretta pistols were better.

only gun I regret buying was my 1st pistol, a Star BKM 9mm. I just got my CCW and was in a hury to buy a 9, I went to the local gun shop and he had the star for $200. It looked good, but I found out later that the previous owner had "home" gun smithed it to make it feed hollow points. The way he did it was to grind the feed ramp lower in the frame and throat the barrel. after he did that if you looked at a fired case it looked pregnant. Not good when using self defense loads. I sold it and took a beating on it. The one good thing I learned from this is to look over any used gun I bought before laying out my hard earned cash.

Got a good deal on an ASA 9 carbine (based on the AR). Stupid thing would never run. Tried every possible fix: mags, ammo (brands and different lengths), springs. Even gave it a to couple different people to play with.

Ended up frustrated and left it in my buddies shop. Someone came in and wanted it even with the known problems.

Took that money and bought an Olyimpic 9 carbine and couldn't be happier.

hahahaha! I've been buying and selling guitars a lot longer than guns. I'd think about it if there was a lot more stuff included. It's not an "ordinary" tele, that's for sure.
Under differrent circumstances it would be fun to make a deal with guitars and guns, but right now...well, if I didn't need the money I'd just BUY the gun and keep the guitar.  :D

I'm convinced that there is just something weird with the .40 round.  The recoil is bizzare compared to the 9 and the .45

The only gun I ever regret buying was back in 1985. I bought a brand new Remington 7400 semi auto in .30-06. It was on sale at a Service Merchandise store, and I bought it on a whim. Big mistake. I mounted a really nice Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10X 40 MM scope on it and headed to the range. After a box of Winchester factory Silvertip ammo, the bolt became difficult to close on a live round. This continued until it would barely lock up at all. I stopped. Went home and cleaned and oiled it, checked the head space, (which was fine), and put it in the safe where it remains to this very day. I totally lost interest in it. Since then I've read one horror story after another about these POS's. I keep saying one day I'll take it to a good smith and get it running right, but that day never seems to come.  Bill T.

As hard as they try S&W just never can seem to get their act together with auto pistols. The one exception is the Model 41. With production costs getting higher and higher, it's most likely only a matter of time before it goes out of production much like the Model 52.  Bill T.

I hate 4506. They just do not feel right. Crappy grips and malfunctions all the time. Probably the reason I have not picked up a M&P. Fear of getting another mistake.
